In this short exploration, we look at the mindfulness teaching of Beginner's Mind, the practice of meeting life with openness, curiosity, and wonder. As you move through your day, consider this question: What might you discover if you approached moments in your everyday life with a Beginner's Mind? It doesn't have to be perfect, but it can be a fun practice that might offer different possibilities than what we thought we knew. ~Katie

Hi,

I'm Katie,

And I'd like to introduce a foundational mindfulness teaching that's always been one of my favorites,

And that's called the beginner's mind.

So this term comes from the Zen tradition and refers to The practice of approaching our experiences from a sense of openness from curiosity and from a willingness to see things freshly.

So there's a well-known saying by the Zen teacher,

Shinryu Suzuki,

And it goes like this.

In the beginner's mind,

There are many possibilities.

But in the experts there are few.

And at first,

Maybe this seems counterintuitive or not,

But after all,

Much of life is encouraging us to become an expert somehow in something.

But mindfulness points to something profound.

The more that we assume we know something,

The less curious we tend to become.

We stop looking,

We stop listening,

We stop discovering,

Most importantly.

So beginner's mind is going to invite us to meet each moment as though it's never happened before.

Can you imagine living that way?

But there's always something waiting to be discovered.

Beneath what we think we already know.

Practice it.

See what you might find.

See what you might discover.

But this can be true in meditation.

This can be true in somatic and embodiment work.

It can be true in our relationships.

And perhaps it can be true in life of itself.

When we approach our experience with curiosity.

Rather than certainty,

We can discover so much more than what's here,

Or what we think is here.

Maybe it's a sensation that was overlooked or a feeling beneath another feeling or.

You know,

A moment of beauty that's hidden within an ordinary day.

Those are my favorite.

But sometimes what we call beginner's mind is really just a.

.

.

A willingness to remain in a relationship with the great mystery,

Whatever that might be.

So there can be something almost magical and ineffable about this.

You know,

The world starts to feel less fixed,

Maybe more alive,

More intimate,

More full of possibility.

So a simple question maybe you can explore today if you'd like is what would change if you met this moment with just a little bit more curiosity rather than certainty?

Sometimes it's the deepest insights that arrive,

Not when we think we found that answer.

But when we become willing to wonder again.

Thank you for being here.
