Attention travels in a deliberate sequence through the body, usually feet to head or head to feet, resting on each region long enough to notice what is present: warmth, pressure, tension, pulsation, or the movement of breath. The stance is neutral observation, in which nothing is fixed or forced, and when attention wanders it is gently returned to the region at hand. Some versions deepen from gross to subtle sensation as the practice settles.

Relaxation-focused body scans
Many guided scans aim to make you relax or fall asleep. The body scan taught here emphasizes neutral awareness over any outcome, noticing sensation without trying to change or fix it, so a restless or tense scan is not a failed one.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
PMR deliberately tenses and releases muscles to produce relaxation. Body scan neither tenses nor tries to loosen anything; it only observes what is already there.
Autogenic training
Autogenic training uses repeated self-suggestions of warmth and heaviness to shift the body toward calm. Body scan makes no suggestions and sets no target state; the attention itself is the whole practice.

Noticing a tight chest or a held breath before it tips into overwhelm is the work of interoceptive awareness, your sense of internal body signals. Body scan trains this by returning attention to the body one region at a time, and body-focused mindfulness has been shown to increase how much people notice and trust these signals, which in turn eased anxiety in a small trial (Lima-Araujo et al., 2022), (Price et al., 2019).

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials found that body scan produced a small increase in mindfulness compared with doing nothing (Hedges' g = 0.27, 95% CI [0.03, 0.50], p < .05), meaning the average practitioner ends up more mindful than roughly three in five people who did no practice (Gan et al., 2022). The same review found no meaningful effect on broader health outcomes, so body scan on its own is better understood as building present-moment awareness than as a treatment (Gan et al., 2022). Other studies, mostly small or drawn from wider mindfulness programs rather than body scan alone, suggest it may sharpen attention to internal sensations (Fischer et al., 2017), while findings on the accuracy of that sensing are mixed (Aaron et al., 2020). Because the samples are small, some measures are self-reported, and some studies carry a high risk of bias, the picture shows early promise but is not yet established.
