Meet your Teacher

Derek Hill believes in creating opportunities for genuine connection, with ourselves, nature, and each other. Supporting people to look inwardly, with self-compassion - helping them uncover their inner resources for self-support and purposeful direction in life. He is a mindfulness and compassion teacher, speaker, and coach, accredited by Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). He teaches 4 to 8-week courses, including Jon Kabat-Zinn's gold standard "Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction." He works with individuals, groups, and organizations to inspire greater happiness, health, and human connection in life and work. Derek's course ‘Waves of Wellbeing and Resilience’ was drawn from both his teaching qualifications, as well his own personal life and professional experiences. He has coached and mentored people for 20 years in high-stress corporate environments, as well as purpose-driven ‘technology for good’ organizations like JustGiving and Farewill, where he spent many wonderful years working with not-for-profit organizations. Derek is sincerely committed to helping others realize their potential, creativity, and fundamental connection to self, others, and the universe. Derek moved to London from his hometown in Dublin. His early life in Ireland colored so much of what he has learned throughout life. Having graduated in creative writing, he always found great inspiration in the books of others, whether fictional, philosophical, or those challenging conventions. Throughout his professional career, where he enjoyed the highs and lows of working abroad, growing businesses, and making a purposeful impact, there was always a pull towards the traditions and philosophies, which inspire his work today. A few life-changing events and an ever-growing personal commitment to meditation practice, finally nudged him to retrain as a mindfulness and compassion teacher, picking up a CPCAB accredited Level 4 qualification, as well as training to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Derek then redesigned his life around a passion and purpose, so he could sustainably support his health and well-being and that of his family. He founded his company Waking Waves to make this possible and is now on his own mindful mission to share the benefits of mindfulness and compassion with others, so they can too!"

Lesson 1

The Power To Find Balance

In Day 1, we re-connect with the a power we've possessed all our lives but barely notice - our breath. We'll share the many functions of the breath and why we depend on it. And together we'll unlock the 1st power - Balance - in our first mindfulness practice. Once which grounds us, regulates our nervous system and reduces symptoms of stress.

Lesson 2

The Power To Increase Focus

In Day 2 we discuss the many ways our digitally overloaded lives, and multi-tasking, can limit our ability to focus. And we share home and work scenarios, which make this even more challenging for us. But this is where our 2nd power of the breath - Focus - and "Box Breathing" comes in. We'll do this famous practice, found in both ancient and modern traditions, to help us regain focus and increase our capacity in future.

Lesson 3

The Power To Boost Vitality

In Day 3, we re-discover a lost art. A talent we mastered as children but tend to lose as adults. We share how the diaphragm supports our breathing, and why harnessing the power of this vital muscle, can help us produce energy more efficiently. This is where we meet our 3rd power of the breath - Vitality - and together we'll share a mindful abdominal breathing practice, to regain that lost art.

Lesson 4

The Power To Renew And Heal

In Day 4, we explore how different types of stress affect us - the normal cycles of ups and down we all experience. And the accumulated stress which can negatively impact our health and wellbeing and lead to chronic stress and burnout. We then share how the branches of our autonomic nervous system can be kept in balance, through a powerful coherent breathing practice - introducing our 4th power - one of Renewal, calm and healing.

Lesson 5

The Power To Transform Awareness

In Day 5, I share a story of my personal experience with the power of the breath. How my growth in meditation practice took a leap of awareness and growth, when I learned to focus my attention on the breath. And how practices like Breath Awareness, can bring about our 5th power - to Transform our lives. Not just in managing stress or regulating emotions. But also by creating a mind-body bridge, we can depend on for stability, health, happiness and connection.

Each day this course continued to exceed my expectations. Derek is such a wise and compassionate guide. I thought I knew a lot about working with the breath, but each session left me with new insight and understanding about the ways breath and breath-work interconnects with so many aspects of our life and wellbeing.
