Transform Your Inner Critic With Radical Self-Compassion: The NVC Guilt Process

With Hans van Veen

When we are feeling guilty, we're in a state where two inner parts are at odds with each other. There's the 'educator' part, telling us what we did 'wrong', and there's the 'chooser' part (that chose the action), wanting to defend itself and its choice, from being educated. To relax this inner tension, we can use the 'guilt process' of Nonviolent Communication, seeing the beauty of both parts and empathizing deeply on the level of Needs for both. This 'inner mediation' (without a T) cultivates compassion for the conflicted inner voices and restores our inner harmony. Image: Getty

Lesson 1

Context: Internal Family Systems (IFS), Nonviolent Communication (NVC) & The Alētheia Model

This first session will paint the landscape that we will be using in the second session, where the core of the practice will happen. In short, I will give a very brief overview of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Nonviolent Communication (NVC), and as an interpretive framing, the 'Alētheia' model.

Lesson 2

The Guilt Process

When we are feeling guilty, we're in a state where two inner parts are at odds with each other. There's the 'educator' part, telling us what we did 'wrong', and there's the 'chooser' part (that chose the action), wanting to defend itself and its choice, from being educated. To relax this inner tension, we can use the 'guilt process' of Nonviolent Communication, seeing the beauty of both parts, and empathizing deeply on the level of Needs for both. This 'inner mediation' (without a T) cultivates compassion for the conflicted inner voices and restores our inner harmony. Important tips: 1. Use an NVC 'Needs list' for reflection; 2. Don't need the intro explanation? The practice starts around 3:15; 3. Pause the track at the specified points & continue when ready; 4. For more effect, use 2 chairs & physically change seats to embody both parts; 5. Writing this process down infinitely clarifies the process; For extra practice, you can check out this track: "NVC Alchemy: Turn Judgments & Triggers Into Beautiful Needs"

Thank you for this introduction of Alethiea coaching and NVC. It was a lot in a short amount of time! I had a glimpse of getting to a core need but I would have liked a little more time to integrate the steps. Again, I appreciate the overview 🙏

This was very effective practice to help me deal with my very, loud and insistent inner critic voice. I chose to do this short course as today’s meditation and my inner critic feels very much seen and heard and the part of me that was feeling guilt and shame is also feeling validated and no longer shamed. The writing or journalling of the exercise is what made this process work. I would love to see more of this work from Hans, and it was also like the “how to guide” for Internal Family Systems demo that Dr Diana Hill does with IfS Dr Shwartz here on insight timer.

Very helpful as I have been thinking of how to repurpose the inner critic knowing intellectually there are no bad parts and this has given me a real insight into that. I love the idea of NVC relating to the external and the internal.

Thank you! This processing surprised me with its gentle effectiveness. I am now considering differently the grief and regrets I have been carrying regarding my brother and a former partner, both deceased, wishing I could have prevented estrangement.
