Kindling The Digestive Fire: An Ayurvedic Approach To Digestive Health

With Jessica Inman

This eight-part course is an exploration of the Ayurvedic concept of the 'digestive fire', or 'agni' in Sanskrit. Ayurveda is the oldest written system of medicine that we have in the world today and its wisdom is just as relevant in our modern world as it was 5,000 years ago when it was first practiced. Ayurveda sees the digestive system as central to our overall health, which it compares to a fire - fuel goes in, is transformed into heat and energy, and a waste product is left behind. Throughout the course, we'll be exploring this analogy of the digestive system being just like a fire, looking at the different ways that the fire can burn and the symptoms that occur when it's not burning optimally, and you'll learn some simple things that you can do to restore your digestive fire to optimal health. Meet your Teacher

Jessica first discovered Ayurveda in 2008 and became fascinated by how holistic and thorough this ancient system of medicine is. After discovering many benefits for herself from applying the principles, she completed her training as a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist with the California College of Ayurveda in 2015. She believes that the wisdom of Ayurveda is especially relevant for the modern world and for many of the health challenges that people experience today, and assists her clients in bringing Ayurvedic principles into their lives in simple and accessible ways.

In this session, you'll learn about the causes of an imbalanced digestive fire and how these are related to the doshas, and you'll learn to identify symptoms that arise with each of the different states.

In this session, we'll be exploring this cycle that the agni moves through and you'll learn the best things to eat at the different times of the day for optimum digestion of the food. You'll also learn a simple technique to help remove toxins that have formed from poor digestion.

Lesson 5

How You Eat Is More Important Than What You Eat

We often place a lot of focus on the foods that we're putting into our bodies, but Ayurveda teaches us that the most important thing is how we eat them. This session begins with a meditation exploring the effect of eating in different environments and situations, and then we'll look at some of the Ayurvedic guidelines around the best way to eat for optimum digestion.

Lesson 6

Feeding The Fire

At the core of Ayurvedic theory is the concept of opposite qualities - conditions are treated with the opposite quality to that which caused it, eg. hot conditions are treated with coldness. In this session, we explore the effect that different qualities of food have on the digestive fire. We'll look at the qualities of foods that help to maintain a balanced agni and the qualities of foods that help to restore balance when the agni isn't burning properly.

Lesson 7

The Healing Power Of Spices

Spices are considered to be a hugely important food group and medicine in Ayurveda. They have a close relationship to the digestive system and can help to balance the digestive fire and maintain good digestive health. In this session, we look at the best spices to use to treat the different states of Agni, and you'll learn a simple tea recipe that can be drunk at any time.

Lesson 8

Putting It All Together

Congratulations on reaching the end of the course! There has been a lot of information included in the last seven sessions, so in this final session we'll look at how to make a successful change to your diet or eating routine and we'll do a reflection exercise and meditation to help you to clarify which change you are ready to make first.

Very insightful course. The visualisation of the digestive fire was so helpful in understanding my digestive needs. I will definitely be implementing the teachings in the course, starting with eating in a calm manner. I’ve done it for a couple days now and I feel so good. I have been suffering from low digestion severe enough to prevent me from working for the past 8 months. Until now, I've felt so helpless, not knowing what caused it or how to treat it. Thanks to this course, I now feel a sense of personal empowerment and confidence in my ability to help my body. Woohoo!
