Wheel Of The Year: Celebrating Lammas

With Jessica Inman

This is a five-day celebration of the Celtic festival of Lammas with meditations and exercises to connect with the energy of the season. Lammas marks the beginning of the harvest season and is celebrated on the 1st August in the Northern Hemisphere and the 1st February in the Southern Hemisphere. Lammas, from the words 'Loaf Mass,' is the celebration of the harvesting of the first grain, and is a time to celebrate abundance, receiving the rewards of our labour, craftsmanship and talent, and to give thanks to the Earth for all she provides us with. During the course, we'll explore some ways to celebrate Lammas in your own life, we'll look at some Ayurvedic considerations for your diet and lifestyle as we begin to transition between summer and autumn, we'll practice some yoga warrior poses, and we'll do some reflection and meditation connected to the themes of the season. Lammas is a time of abundance and celebration where we can appreciate and give thanks for all that we have, and this course is intended to bring you inspiration and joy at this time. Meet your Teacher

Jessica is a long-term student of natural and holistic systems of medicine and spirituality and has long been fascinated with the origins of traditions and celebrations around the year. A certified Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist, she guides clients to an awareness of how the seasons can affect our bodies and our wellbeing, utilising simple practices and techniques to regain balance. She believes that the patterns and cycles that we find in nature can also be found within ourselves and that, through aligning ourselves with the seasons, we can realise our own natural wisdom. She has created these courses as an introduction to the Celtic wheel of the year and to the ways we can celebrate and align with these festivals.

Lesson 1

Harvesting The First Grain

Lammas marks the beginning of the harvest season, where bread was traditionally baked to celebrate the harvesting of the grains. At Lammas, we receive the rewards of our hard work and begin to welcome the abundance we have worked so hard for. After an introduction to the course, we begin with a meditation to see this time of the year through the eyes or our ancestors and understand the significance of the harvest time.

Lesson 3

Late Summer Nourishment

In Ayurveda, the late summer marks a transition between the summer and the autumn, where the dominant energy in our bodies shifts from fire (pitta) to air (vata). This session looks at some dietary principles to support your body during this transition, as well as looking at the importance of gratitude for our meals from an Ayurvedic perspective.

Lesson 4

Warrior Postures

In this physical yoga session, we practice a sequence of warrior postures. Warrior postures are standing postures which encourage physical strength and mental determination and can support us to feel energised and enthusastic during the active time of Lammas, and to celebrate the victory of our inner warrior as we receive the rewards of our hard work. Have your yoga mat with you for this one, and if you'd prefer a video demonstration, I've recorded a video called 'Warrior Postures For Strength And Balance' to guide you visually.
