Over the next 5 days, we'll explore some of the biggest challenges we face with stress in our busy modern lives.
Instead of trying to 'end' stress, or make it 'the enemy', we'll explore the origin of stress and the vital role it plays in both protecting us and shaping our experience of everyday life.
Working through common scenarios and struggles, we'll share powerful practices and well-being habit-builders, rooted in neuroscience, so you can respond to the difficulties and challenges you encounter - alleviating the stress and anxiety you experience and lowering the risk of burnout.
To achieve this, we'll invite 5 powerful waves:
1) Waves of Intention: so we "show up" purposefully, to bring about sustainable change.
2) Waves of Calm: to stabilize and ease reactivity before the ripples of stress become waves.
3) Waves of Vitality: to encourage conscious reflective pauses in self-care habits and practices.
4) Waves of Compassion: so we recognize our struggles and turn down the self-critical voice.
5) Waves of Stillness: to cultivate inner stillness, so future response from this place instead.
This course is ideal if you:
- want powerful practices to help you respond in moments of stress, overwhelm, or anxiety
- need to tune out of the busyness of modern life and see choices with greater clarity
- seek lasting sustainable and intentional change in your health and wellbeing
It will be a reliable place of stability, presence, and balance
Where you can “Mindfully Calm the Waves of Stress”
Derek Hill believes in creating opportunities for genuine connection, with ourselves, nature, and each other. Supporting people to look inwardly, with self-compassion - helping them uncover their inner resources for self-support and purposeful direction in life.
He is a mindfulness and compassion teacher, speaker, and coach, accredited by the Counseling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). He teaches 4 to 8-week courses, including Jon Kabat-Zinn's gold standard "Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction." He works with individuals, groups, and organizations to inspire greater happiness, health, and human connection in life and work. Derek's course ‘Waves of Connection’ was drawn from both his teaching qualifications, as well his own personal life and professional experiences.
He has coached and mentored people for 20 years in high-stress corporate environments, as well as purpose-driven ‘technology for good’ organizations like JustGiving and Farewill, where he spent many wonderful years working with not-for-profit organizations. Derek is sincerely committed to helping others realize their potential, creativity, and fundamental connection to self, others, and the universe.
Derek moved to London from his hometown in Dublin. His early life in Ireland colored so much of what he had learned throughout life. Having graduated in creative writing, he always found great inspiration in the books of others, whether fictional, philosophical, or those challenging conventions.
Throughout his professional career, where he enjoyed the highs and lows of working abroad, growing businesses, and making a purposeful impact, there was always a pull towards the traditions and philosophies, which inspire his work today. A few life-changing events and an ever-growing personal commitment to meditation practice, finally nudged him to retrain as a mindfulness and compassion teacher, picking up a CPCAB-accredited Level 4 qualification, as well as training to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
Derek then redesigned his life around a passion and purpose, so he could sustainably support his health and well-being and that of his family. He founded his company Waking Waves to make this possible and is now on his mindful mission to share the benefits of mindfulness and compassion with others, so they can too!...
Lição 1
Waves Of Intention
In Day 1, we explore the origins of Stress, learning why our prehistoric wiring, can be unsupportive in our busy modern life.
We'll look at what might stand in the way of being more balanced and emotionally regulated.
And together, in our first practice we'll set our intention for how we will purposefully 'show up' over the course.
Lição 2
Waves Of Calm
On Day 2 we discuss how, even a day full of intention, can be derailed by stress reactivity, or circumstances out of our control. Depending on our circumstances, history, or habits, we may or may not be resourced to cope.
The "Transactional model of Stress" helps to illustrate this and we discuss how introducing regular short mindful practices, can be a powerful coping and stress resilience-building strategy.
So together, we walk through 3 famous breath practices, to help us bring more Waves of Calm into our lives.
Lição 3
Waves Of Vitality
On Day 3, we discuss the importance of genuine investment in our self-care, not because it is the 'on trend' thing to do.
We'll share a practical and memorable way to assess your current level and quality of 'self-care', so you can bring more moments of self-caring vitality and make lasting sustainable change.
And together through a Breath Awareness practice, will invite one of those waves of vitality in the moment.
Lição 4
Waves Of Compassion
On Day 4, we recognize that despite our capacity for overcoming life's greatest struggles, it's often everyday difficulties that tend to pile up and unleash our self-criticism, blame, or feelings of inadequacy. And how we are less likely in these situations, to turn compassion inward.
So together we explore the benefits of introducing more Waves of Compassion in life. And through a short self-compassion break, begin to cultivate these waves more proactively, to support ourselves in times of difficulty or adversity.
Lição 5
Waves Of Stillness
On Day 5, we take a closer look at our tendency to respond from a place of emotion, in high-stress situations. I share a personal example to illustrate the stress response in action.
We then work through a famous reflection, used often in mindfulness, to help us create more space and stillness. Realizing the choices available to us.
And by sharing some practical applications and a deeply calming mindful pause, we'll invite more waves of stillness into our lives. So we can better respond, not react in the future.

I took my time with this course and learned things that will help me, especially as a stressed out hospital nurse. Looking forward to learning more.
