Counting to fall asleep (counting sheep)
Counting sheep or counting to drift off is a mental distraction meant to occupy a restless mind at bedtime. Counted breathing counts the breath itself to pace a slow rhythm, and the calming comes mostly from the slowed breathing, not the counting alone.
Fast or activating breathwork (e.g., Wim Hof style)
Intensive breathwork styles use rapid, forceful breathing to deliberately stir up sensation and arousal. Counted breathing does the opposite, keeping the pace slow and gentle to settle the body, and breathing too fast can cause dizziness and should be eased off.
