3 Steps To Access Self-Compassion

With Henny Flynn

At times self-compassion can feel like a hard thing to find. We may have been conditioned through our life experiences to see it as something unimportant or selfish and yet, our deepest wisest Self has an innate understanding that it’s something we all need. The 3 simple tools I’m going to share with you over the next 3-days are quick steps to help you access self-compassion when it feels most needed or when it feels hard to find. And while each of them is simple to put into practice, they represent a profound choice: the decision to choose your own mental and physical well-being as being worthy of your attention. The decision to choose yourself, over any stories you may carry that might lead you in another way. And these 3 practical compassion tools are all things you can return to again and again in your day.

Lesson 1

Your Heart In Your Hands

Today we explore the first practice, experiencing the simple power of placing our hand on our heart. I share some of the science behind why this is such a useful self-compassion practice. And we spend a little time, acknowledging some of what can get in our way, even when we know greater self-compassion would truly benefit us... and potentially benefit those around us too. I also share some of my own story and how this practice came to be so meaningful in my own life. We close with a mindful moment, including some gentle music to help deepen the time of rest and relaxation.

Lesson 2

The Quick Long Breath

In Day 2 we deepen our awareness of our breath, with a quick exercise using a longer breath. And we explore how even in the brief time it takes to breathe in and out, our body goes through a time of transition. We can use our awareness of this transition to help us create a greater sense of calm - and through doing this, bring more self-compassion to the moment. Just as Day 1's exercise is possible to practice anytime, anywhere... so is this. It's another wonderful example of practical compassion we can all use everyday. As before, we will close with a mindful moment to deeply rest and explore the practice.

Lesson 3

The Kindest Words

In Day 1 and 2, we used a gesture and our breath to help access our self-compassion physically. In today's lesson, we use language to bring more self-compassion directly to our mind. We see how sometimes we may carry stories about how we 'should' be - and that sometimes those stories can lead us to being overly critical or judgmental of ourselves. And we see how our language can inform - and change - how we feel. Like the others, this practice is also available to us anytime, anywhere. Something we can all use everyday. As before, we will close with a mindful moment for deep rest and relaxation.

Thank you for this short and beautiful course that has provided me with such important tools that I can use daily… I aware now of how simple and easy it is to just pause for a moment to acknowledge and appreciate myself… I’ve started several courses on IT in the past and don’t follow through… this one has been short and to the point… I will listen again and know that I can incorporate these self love practices into my days… Thank you again with all my heart😊❤️🙏

I will put the tools in practice in my life. The hands in my heart, the 3 breaths and calling myself ‘my darling’ amongst others. Thank you so much for this!

Thank you for these practical reminders. We live in a world that wants to pull us away from the power of loving ourselves particularly as women (toxic masculinity not withstanding). I’ve traveled a long journey back to myself and at 65 years old I think I’m starting to feel the rewards of truly loving myself although I suspect I’ll keep learning up to my last breath. I hope so! I’m in awe with the amazing content and support available to us all now. You help lift the veil of the separation from ourselves (no separation =love) to show us what is, and always has been, here for us. Thank you 🙏
