How To Change Your Mind

With Karim Rushdy

Our mode of mind as we move through the world can either help or hinder our progress, nourish or deplete our energy, and be the cause of great joy or suffering in our lives. Every perception, every thought, every emotion, and every sensation is experienced through the lens of “being” or “doing”. Over 5 short lessons, we will explore what modes of mind are and how they shape our self-image, relationships, and worldview by influencing our biases, beliefs, and internal narrative. By the end of the course, you will have learned the difference between being and doing modes of mind, how to identify which mode you are in at any given moment, and how cultivating mindfulness and the ability to shift between modes can have a profound impact on your health and wellbeing.

Lesson 1

What Are Modes Of Mind?

In this lesson, we cover the foundational principles of modes of mind from a psychological, neuroscientific, and contemplative perspective. We’ll explore how networks of neurons - the fundamental units of our brain and nervous system - are connected to and shape our habitual patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Lesson 1 builds a foundation and sets the scene for a deep dive into doing and being modes of mind.

Lesson 2

Shifting Gears

In this lesson, we go on an experiential journey through doing and being modes of mind. I’ll guide you in a short mindfulness practice called shifting mental gears that allows you to encounter and know these modes of mind first-hand, and make real the difference between “living in our heads” and being with our direct moment-to-moment experience.

Lesson 3

Doing & Driven-Doing Modes Of Mind

In this lesson, we unpack the doing mode of mind and look at its evil twin-driven-doing mode, which can easily lead us down the path of anxiety and depression unless we know how to recognize and disengage from it. You’ll learn that doing mode serves a very important role in your life, but like all good tools, you must know how to use it wisely and not let it use you!

Lesson 4

The Lightness Of Being

In this lesson, we’ll see how being mode of mind helps us experience life in its full multidimensional splendor, rather than being caught in our thoughts or trapped in a cycle of reactivity. In addition to exploring the characteristics of being mode, I’ll guide you in another mindfulness practice designed to help you shift out of doing or driven doing and into being mode.

Lesson 5

To Be Or Not To Be

In this final lesson, we dispel the myth that you can only get things done in doing mode, and see how being in mode can make us more efficient and effective at home, work, and in life in general. We wrap up the course together with a high-level overview of the 7 key differences between being and doing.

Extremely well presented at a pace which allows the listener to absorb. The concepts really struck a chord and resonated in me. The exercise on day 2 describing how to shift from doing mode to being mode was so simple yet deeply impactful. The course has brought to light my dissatisfaction with aspects of my life and shown this is due operating in driven-doing mode, constantly trying to achieve or ‘belong’ to feel relevant. For a few years I have been striving to find a better path and Karim’s insight really has confirmed how I might go about making the change and staying on track. Thanks Karim.

I found this course extremely helpful, so much so that I even listened to the last lesson twice, taking notes the second time. For me, the perspectives and practices were (are) life-changing and I'm already applying them. This may be a must-DO (<grin>) course for those who are still in DO-ing mode and want to learn how to BE more in BE-ing. Thank you, Karim.

I found the difference between being mode and doing mode very interesting. I'll be looking into this further, as well as seeing my thoughts as just thoughts, not facts.
