How To Move Through Procrastination With One Simple Practice

With Dee Hennessy

When we procrastinate it usually feels good in the moment. We get to do something we want instead and we don't have y meet any obligation. Over time though this habit of procrastination adds greatly to our existing stress load - sitting heavily on our shoulders and dragging us down. this course begins with the recognition of the cost of procrastination before exploring two evidence-based resources, namely the Pomodoro Time Management Technique and the Practice Of Self Compassion as the key to letting go of this old habit energy. Lesson two introduces the practice that integrated these two resources as the foundational practice for changing your relationship with procrastination as you forge new neural pathways and find your way out of this crippling stuck-ness. Lesson three then gives you three golden guidelines to easily integrate the learning from this course into your everyday.

Lesson 1

Understanding Procrastination

Often we think of procrastination as a personal failing, - my laziness, my lack of discipline, my stupidity. Sometimes we think of procrastination as something shameful, a habit to be hidden and we put a lot of energy into trying to force ourselves to be different. In this lesson, we learn that we can let go of all of that baggage as we understand procrastination as simply our old brain response to carrying too much stress. With this insight from neuroscience, we are free then to unhook from this old habit energy, and to connect with the newer part of our brain - the pre-frontal cortex - where we can forge new neural pathways and so free ourselves from this heavy unhelpful stress burden.

Lesson 2

The Practice

This is a simple, evidence-based way to not only recognize the negative impact of procrastination but also to unhook from this embedded habit energy and to begin to forge new neural pathways - finding your way out of this old brain stress response.

Very good suggestions. I really like the scheduling of tasks...setting aside a specific time to focus on one task. I think by doing this, it will also help with motivation.

Even though I already know what was presented in this course, your manner and style of presenting the information is very effective and inspiring. I appreciate and need the reminding to do the practice! Because, similar to the clutter that accumulates in my brain, home & work, forgetting to stick with the method begins insidiously until all those lapses have built up into problematic procrastination! Thank you for inspiring and motivating me 🥰

I actually started this months ago, but I then started several other courses and there’s been too much going on to even be bothered with this app (I know right!). I’ll listen again and write it down because I don’t often understand or retain verbal instructions. I’ll give it a go but the thought of only having 25 minutes to do something gives me anxiety! Do I set a timer for the brain break as well because often that will turn into a whole day of YouTube videos or window shopping? Yes my problems with procrastination and distraction are chronic. I created a new “do three things today” list a few weeks ago which is now 10 items long and it’s just become yet another backlog. Nothing works….with paperless app I just move things from one list to another, Phone reminders, year planner, week planner on fridge, paper sheet per day planner, 5 second journal was a joke because I couldn’t do it every day and I’d then sit for hours trying to remember what I did four days ago! Finch app the bird would’ve died had it been real…. Never tried Pomodoro, but I’ll give it a go!

Sometimes the simplest messages are the most effective. They make us feel empowered to take hold of our difficulties and deal with them. I've never before seen a course on procrastination.. So this is particularly valuable advice. Thank you Dee 🌸 🙏
