Namaste.
Have you ever felt so stressed?
That your body feels like a coiled spring.
Or perhaps you're lying in bed exhausted.
But you mine just won't shut off.
There's a very simple powerful tool that's used by therapists and sleep specialists alike It's called the body scan meditation.
So what exactly is it?
Well,
A body scan is a mindfulness practice where you deliberately move your attention through different parts of your body.
From your head to your toe,
Or from your toe to your head,
It really doesn't matter.
Unlike other meditations focused on the breath or a mantra,
Here your anchor is a physical sensation.
The goal isn't to change anything immediately.
But to notice.
To observe tension,
Warmth,
Tingling or even a numbness without judgement.
By shining a light of awareness on these areas you often find that the tension naturally begins to dissolve.
Why is this so effective for relaxation and insomnia?
When we are stressed or can't sleep,
Our nervous system is stuck in the fight or flight mode.
A mind's race.
But our bodies are often frozen in tension.
The body scan forces a shift.
It interrupts the cycle of anxiety and thoughts.
By grounding you in the present moment.
Physical moment.
Here is how you can do it.
First,
Lie down or sit comfortably.
Close your eyes.
Take three deep breaths just to settle yourself.
And then bring your attention to your toes.
Notice how they feel.
Are they cold?
Tight?
Just observe.
Then,
Imagine breathing into that area.
And on the exhale imagine that tension melting away and then slowly move your attention to your calves,
Your knees,
Your thighs.
Notice the contact your body makes with the bed or the chair.
Continue this journey up through your hips,
Your stomach,
Your chest your hands,
Your shoulders,
And finally your face.
If you find a spot that feels tight Don't fight it!
Just acknowledge it.
Hello Tension.
Often the act of just noticing is enough to let it go.
And if your mind wanders,
And it probably will,
Just gently guide your attention back to the part of the body that you were focusing on.
Practicing this for just a few minutes a day can lower your cortisol levels,
Reduce chronic pain,
And dramatically improve your sleep quality.
It teaches your brain that it's safe to power down.
So tonight,
Instead of counting sheep,
Try scanning your body.
Start at your toes and let the relaxation wash over you,
One breath at a time.
Our body knows how to rest.
You just have to remind it.
Namaste.
