Have you ever entertained the thought that you get to the end of your life and suddenly realize what you’ve been taking for granted? When people approach death, they sometimes experience profound insights into what it really means to be human, but why wait until then? Humans have arguably the most potential of any creature in the known universe, yet many of us live limited lives, never fully appreciating what it means to be human. Most of us are endowed with miraculous bodies, amazing minds, powerful emotions, and wonderful senses, and we live on this awe-inspiring planet. Caught up in our busy lives it’s so easy to lose contact with our bodies and senses. Lost in thought, we often take the miracle and wonder of life for granted. Leonardo Da Vinci noted that a typical human, “Looks without seeing, listens without hearing, touches without feeling, eats without tasting, moves without physical awareness, inhales without awareness of odour or fragrance, and talks without thinking.” This 10-day course will take you on a journey of exploration and appreciation. Each session includes a brief talk followed by a related guided practice.


Meet your Teacher

Paul Riches is a teacher and author who has been running weekly mindfulness sessions in the workplace since 2012. He has a BSc in Cognitive Science and is a trained Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy teacher. Paul first experienced meditation and awareness practice when he went through a difficult time in his early twenties that made a real difference to his happiness and well-being. Using insights from his own practice, Paul’s approach blends secular mindfulness, evolutionary psychology, scientific research, and the challenges of our modern lifestyles.

Lesson 1

The Potential of Being Human

In this session, we'll outline the potential of being human, the things that stop us fully appreciating this, and what we will be exploring on the course. This is followed by guided practice to enter a foundational peaceful, calm, and relaxed state of being.

Body

In this session, we’ll explore how we can end up with a distorted and unhealthy relationship with our own body and appreciate how amazing and miraculous our body is. This will be followed by a guided practice to connect with awareness, and appreciation of our body.

Emotions

In this session we’ll be exploring emotions, what they are and how they can be useful. This will be followed by a guided practice to explore, acknowledge, and begin to release held emotions.

Lesson 4

Thoughts

In this session we explore what thoughts are as well as the difference between intentional and unintentional thoughts. This is followed by a guided practice to observe thoughts come and go, while appreciating our powerful and amazing mind.

Sight

In this session we’ll be exploring sight and vision, followed by a guided practice to explore and experience this important sense.

Lesson 6

Sound

In this session we’ll be exploring sound and our sense of hearing. This will be followed by a guided practice to explore sound and appreciate this miraculous sense.

Lesson 7

Touch

In this session we’ll be investigating our sense of touch, followed by a guided practice to explore and appreciate this important sense of connection.

Lesson 8

Wholeness

In this session we’ll be investigating wholeness and the relationship between mind, emotions, body, and senses. This is followed by a guided practice to explore, experience, and appreciate wholeness.

Stream of Experience

In this session, we’ll investigate our attention and awareness within the flowing stream of experience. This is followed by a guided practice to explore and appreciate the subtle complexity of our stream of experience.

Appreciation and Gratitude

In this final session we’ll be bringing everything together and contemplating how miraculous our life really is. This will be followed by a guided practice to explore and experience appreciation and gratitude for our body, emotions, mind, and senses.
