Recover & Restore Somatic Movement Series

With Meg Rinaldi

This course of three guided somatic movement sessions is for those recovering from accident or illness. These sessions are "Unwinding The Spine" done on a firm bed or on the floor, "Free Your Spine In Sitting" guided while sitting on a chair, and "Leaning and Lifting for Balance" is also guided while you are on a chair. The focus of this series is on offering support for regaining rotation and balance in your movement. Go through the sessions in the order in which they are presented and then after that let your curiosity guide you. Be generous with yourself and immerse yourself in learning at your own pace. It's my wish to introduce you to new ways of sensing, feeling, thinking, moving, and acting that expand what's possible for you in body, mind, brain, and emotional heart.

Lesson 1

Unwind Your Spine

Unwinding your spine is about increasing your ability to turn and look around yourself. This kind of movement is essential for staying alert and safe in one's surroundings as well as walking. Walking or running is rotating around the center of yourself. Skilled rotation is necessary for powerful movements like swinging an ax, a golf club, doing martial arts, or exploring those twists in yoga.

Lesson 2

Free Your Spine In Sitting

When we shift from lying down to sitting, we change our relationship to gravity. The first session in this series "Unwind Your Spine" was in lying down. It gives a taste of an earlier developmental posture. When we are in recovery and restorative mode it's good to know that we can shift back into earlier movements as a strategy. This session offers an exploration in how you organize for rotation in an upright position. When we humans come into an upright position our orientation to space is more determined by our eyesight. When we are upright, our eyes organize around a horizon line.

Lesson 3

Chair Sitting: Leaning and Lifting For Balance

The exploration in this session is about how instability supports stability. This is a basic engineering principle that applies to any system and that includes our human system. We fall with each step we take: walking is actually falling from one foot to another. Knowing this can help you to think differently and learn to work with ongoing instability in a way that is safe and accessible for you.
