Mindfulness For Families In Four Simple Lessons

With Anne-Marie Emanuelli - Mindful Frontiers

Bringing mindfulness into the family routine is a healthy way to instill a practice that will last a lifetime. Any activity can be turned into a meditation/mindfulness practice. In this course, families will learn four ways to bring mindfulness into their daily routines. Lesson 1: Mindfulness in the morning while getting ready for school Lesson 2: Mindfulness in the car while driving home from school Lesson 3: Mindfulness at the dinner (or breakfast) table Lesson 4: Mindfulness at random times of the day These lessons are intended for families with children between the ages of 6 and 11 who have the attention span to follow directions. (Please make your own decision whether your children can follow along with the guidance.) The lessons are set up so that a parent/guardian listens to the practice and does it alone first. Then, they choose when to bring it into their family routine. Each lesson should be reviewed by the adult first before trying it with their children. These lessons are structured so that you can do them one at a time and come back to the course for the next one when you're ready.

When incorporating mindfulness into family routines, we use all the senses to engage attention. In this lesson, you will first practice by yourself first and then bring it to your family.

Lesson 2

Mindfulness While On A Drive

When we engage in an activity mindfully we slow down and REALLY pay attention with applied concentration and open curiosity. I have noticed that when mindfulness is brought to an activity it becomes really enjoyable and imaginative. When the activity is enjoyed by a group, everyone has a different experience and it is meaningful to all. In this lesson, we will again invite the senses to engage with our environment on a drive. Let's go!

Lesson 3

Mindfulness At A Meal

In this lesson, we will bring mindfulness to the table during a meal. The reasons for bringing mindfulness meditation into your family’s life are well worth the effort. - Families learn how present-moment mindfulness awareness can bring relaxation and social-emotional well-being into their homes. - Children learn that they aren’t judged by their thoughts, sensations, and feelings. - Mindfulness is a way to feel good about yourself, just as we are in this moment, and it settles the nervous system in the process. - Parents model what it looks like to be confident yet relaxed; to be happy and at ease while accepting that life is never perfect. - Families build strong bonds through a shared activity; the time spent together is an investment in compassionate relationship-building.
