Teens: Discover Your Source Of Personal Power

With Abigail W

Life is full of challenges. We experience stress, have unpleasant emotions like anger and anxiety, experience negative self-talk, racing thoughts; and difficulty focusing, falling asleep, and staying asleep, to name a few challenges. Many of us haven’t been taught how to focus, how to calm down, how to settle our minds, and how to support ourselves when we are feeling stressed and overwhelmed. We lack the skills to handle these challenges. One of the ways to build these skills is by learning and using mindfulness practices. Over the next 10 days we will explore how different mindfulness practices can help you develop healthy habits in response to a variety of challenges and situations in your life.

Lesson 1

Connecting To Your Internal & External Resources

This session is an introduction to mindfulness. We will explore how our breath, body, mind, and relationships with the self, others, and the world can support and increase our wellbeing. We have resources we can tap into to support challenges in our lives. We will have a mindful check-in practice to connect to each of our resources and consider when this practice can support us in our daily life.

Lesson 2

Using Your Breath To Change How You Feel

In this session we explore how our breath can calm us down and support emotional balance when we are having a hard time. The ability to calm down is a skill that most people aren't taught. We will briefly explore how our nervous system and our breath are connected and end with a calming breath practice.

Lesson 3

Tuning In To The Messages Of Your Body

In this session we explore the importance of checking in with our body. Our body is so much more than something to look at. Our bodies are constantly giving us messages throughout the day about how we are doing. When we feel overwhelmed, burnout, tired, or stressed, we tend to disconnect from ourselves, others, and our environment. When we can listen to the messages of our body we can learn how to better care for it.

Lesson 4

Feeling Your Emotions

In this session we explore how emotions show up in our body. Being human means we will experience many different emotions - some pleasant and some unpleasant. We can choose how we want to respond to more challenging emotions like anxiety. We will do a practice to cultivate calmness when experiencing challenging emotions.

Lesson 5

Observing Your Thoughts

In this session we explore our thoughts and the quality of our thoughts. Our minds are thought-making machines. They plan and worry about the future and ruminate in the past. When we can pause and label our thoughts we have more clarity over what our mind is working on. When we know where our mind goes we can choose where we want to direct our attention.

Lesson 6

Practicing Self-Kindness

In this session we explore how not every thought we think is true. Human beings make mistakes; feel ashamed, embarrassed, and inadequate; and all share negative self talk. We can examine our self-talk to decide if our thoughts are facts or opinion. Do we tear ourselves down or support ourselves the way we support others? We all deserve the same kindness we extend to others. Self-kindness helps flip the narrative in our head and allows us to decide what we want to believe about ourselves.

Lesson 7

Practicing Kindness For Others

In this session we build on the knowledge that not every thought is true and observe how the thoughts we think about other people can connect or disconnect us from the people in our lives. Being human means we will experience many challenges in life. In some challenges we can use our strengths to support ourselves and sometimes we need the support of others. In this session we will focus on ways to strengthen our relationships with others.

Lesson 8

Connecting To My Surroundings

In this session we will mindfully explore the space you are in and notice how it feels to be in that space. The world is rich with sensory stimulation that can distract us and impact our wellbeing. When we give our minds and bodies a chance to explore our space, we become aware of how we are receiving the space and can choose how we want to respond to our surroundings.

Lesson 9

Practicing Gratitude

In this session we practice savoring the good in our life with gratitude. It’s easy to overlook all of the good things that happen in our life daily. We can pause and be grateful for our body, breath, mind, relationships, and experiences. Research has linked gratitude to stress reduction, better sleep, increased self-esteem, increased optimism, and increased resilience in the face of challenges, among many more benefits. The more we practice gratitude and appreciate what is going well in our lives, the more our mind looks more for things to be grateful for.

Lesson 10

Using Your Resources To Promote Self-Care

In this session we are putting together everything that we have explored over the last nine sessions with a focus on developing a self-care practice. Self-care is any activity that we do with awareness and intention to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. When self-care practices are integrated into a daily routine, they start to become a way of being, and we can approach life with more gentleness and curiosity.

I’ve listened to this like 5 times already. Abigail is so good at this...helping focus on what matters and ignoring what doesn’t matter.
