The world is rich with sensory stimulation. The space we are in can be a source of support or cause distraction. When we give our minds and bodies a chance to explore the environment it gives us a chance to notice how it feels to be in that space. If we notice buzzing lights are distracting or cause agitation we can do something about it. This practice can support helping kids focus in school settings. Parents- to support engagement suggest drawing the experience after the practice.

Welcome to this practice of exploring your five senses.

I'm Abby and I'm so happy to be practicing with you today.

Did you know things like sights,

Sounds,

And even smells can impact how we feel in the space that we're in?

When we pay attention to the space we are in,

We can notice how that space makes us feel.

Some sounds,

Like music,

Can give us pleasure,

While other sounds,

Like a car honking,

Can cause us to feel irritated.

Some sights,

Like a puppy playing,

Might cause us to feel joy,

While a spider or a cockroach might cause us to feel a little fear.

Some smells,

Like baking cookies,

Might cause us to feel excited,

While other smells might cause us to feel disgust.

So let's practice exploring the space you are in right now using all of your senses.

For this practice,

You can stand up,

Or sit up tall,

Or even lay down.

You choose what feels best for you right now.

So begin to explore what you can see in the space you're in.

Notice if anything you see causes you to feel pleasant or unpleasant.

Maybe you see a picture of you and someone you love,

Or maybe you notice some clutter in the corner.

Maybe you notice the sky is sunny or cloudy.

Explore the space with your eyes,

Noticing how different things make you feel.

And try to find something in the space that you haven't noticed before.

Now shift your attention from what you can see to what you can hear.

It might be helpful to close your eyes or look down so that you're not distracted by any sights.

Begin to explore what you can hear and listen to all the sounds around you.

Can you hear sounds far away,

Or sounds near you in the room or the space that you're in,

Or even sounds inside your body?

Try to notice more than one sound and notice how these sounds make you feel.

Now,

Shift your attention to what you can taste.

What does it taste like in your mouth?

Does it change if you move your tongue around your mouth?

Does it change if you open your mouth and close it back up?

Just notice how it feels as you explore the taste in your mouth.

And now,

Shift your attention to what you can smell.

Can you notice more than one scent around you?

Do you notice if these scents are pleasant or unpleasant?

And last,

Bring your attention to what you can touch.

Notice where your body connects to a source of support,

Maybe a floor or a chair or a bed or the ground.

Can you feel your clothing touching your body?

Can you feel the air around you touching your skin?

Notice how it feels when you bring your attention to what you can feel.

Continue to explore the space you are in and notice what can you feel,

What can you smell,

What can you taste,

What can you hear,

And what can you see.

Be present to all of your senses until you hear the sound of the bell.

Notice how this practice felt for you,

Where there are senses you are able to focus on more easily than others.

Think about all the different places that you can try this five-sense practice.

And if you try it in other places,

Notice if your experience changes based on the space that you're in.

Thank you for practicing with me.
