Self-Care Healing Spaces For Grief & Loss

With Judith

Self-care nurture during your experience of grief and loss offers you inner strength and support to help you move through this challenging emotional experience. Each session in this 10-day course uses a healing metaphor of an imaginary pathway that will guide you to a self-care healing space we will find together; a stop along our imaginary pathway that will help you find the healing space that is within you. Each healing space we encounter in this course is one you can return to repeatedly when the course is over, for you will have learned techniques to help you find healing love and joy within memories, restorative energy in nature and comfort in your own home.

Meet your Teacher

Over the past eight years, she has served as a hospice volunteer offering complementary therapy to bereaved family members, and has recently created a voluntary teaching program of self-care for hospice staff. Self-Care Healing Spaces for Grief and Loss follows her earlier written publication, The Caregiver’s Companion, and extends the self-care theme in new ways to anyone who is grieving.

Lesson 1

Awakening Your Inner Healer

In our first session together, you will be immersed in our first healing space of self-nurture. This is a foundational self-care technique that will become a meaningful practice for you right away as a coping strategy you can use long after our time is over to offer soothing care to yourself. It will serve to both comfort you and awaken your inner healer as you move through your grief.

Lesson 2

The Healing Space of Positive Memories

Session two invites you to experience the self-care healing space and positive energy-flow of positive memories as a healing gift from your loved one; a gift in which you can begin to find yourself again as you recall the good times you once shared with your loved one. The healing energy of positive memories also helps you to regain courage to face the future.

Lesson 3

The Self-Care Healing Space of Health

Session three looks at how the body, mind and spirit/soul express emotion in the absence or presence of food and sleep. An awareness of these responsive inter-connected links helps you to meet the challenges of your grief with the strength you receive from the energy of balanced nutritional support, hydration, and adequate rest and sleep. Together, these supports fuel your inner light and temporarily lift you out of the darkness of your grief.

Lesson 4

Exhaustion

In Session four, our healing pathway leads us to the potential self-care healing space of exhaustion, one of the components of the mists that surround our healing pathway. Despite attempts to prevent exhaustion, often the inability to sleep over an extended period of time, combined with the emotional exhaustion of grief, simply bring one’s life to a standstill where care of the self is essential to recover from its debilitating effects. In today’s session we turn to nature to help us in our recovery using a guided imagery of the healing space of ancient earth energy.

Lesson 5

Earth Element Healing

In session five, the elements of nature are introduced as a sacred healing space, selecting the earth element as a place to begin this understanding. You are encouraged to experience a new kind of self-care healing and comfort from the earth as you walk with mindful awareness, awakening to your relationship with nature, and the potential that exists within nature for your own personal healing.

Lesson 6

Water Element Healing

In session six, we focus on some of the many attributes of the water element as a healing force within nature - both externally and internally - and as an ancient healing resource for us as we grieve. Specific suggestions derived from water element’s teachings are offered for you, giving rise to your being open to receive self-care healing from these teachings as you grieve.

Lesson 7

Fire Element Healing

Session seven introduces the fire element in its various symbolic forms as a comforting healing space during grief. Within the fire element, unspoken and undemanding companionship is undeniably experienced within one’s own home through this ancient vehicle of comforting support. Energies return as part of your self-care healing awareness, stimulated by the fire element warming your heart with its familiarity.

Lesson 8

Air Element Healing

In session eight, the healing pathway leads you to find stimulating comfort and solace from something as simple as a pleasing fragrance reaching out to you, carried by the ancient, life-giving air element, uplifting you instantly with its “in the moment” self-care healing space of beauty and familiarity. Causing you to stop and heal in place, aware of the peaceful inner space within you as you do this.

Lesson 9

Ether Element Healing

Session nine integrates your understanding that the healing benefits from each of the elements of nature are found within the presence of the ether element; its effect - both externally and internally - allows you to experience the sense of peace and pleasure that each of the elements creates within you, expanding your horizons as you stop to heal in place, to absorb the beauty and awe within these moments of self-care healing space. Expanding you internally, preparing you to greet your inner sun again.

Lesson 10

Healing And Hope

Session ten reviews the key points of the course and offers healing affirmations as a meditative focus as you walk in nature. Combining meditation with exercise has been shown to reduce depression. Forest breathing research also shows measurable reduction in stress levels, an important factor and supportive self-care healing space as you are grieving. One can never say how long it will take to recover from your grief; what is important, is that you bring honour to the soul of the one you grieve by bringing honour and comfort to your own soul. And as you do this, you will be able to lift your eyes to see and feel the comforts of the sun again. This pathway of continuous healing is dedicated to my late brother, Gordon.

It's now one year since my son died. Fentanyl poisoning. He was 31. Bright, loving, tall and strong, loyal and kind. An addict in and out of recovery. We miss him so much. We have grown through healing. We celebrate his life. His recovery, his addiction. His contributions.

Thank you for normalizing some of my experience of grief. I have been so concerned that I have not coped well enough with everything I have had to do. It is never ending. It has just been the first anniversary of my husband passing. The exhaustion has been overwhelming.

I appreciate the quiet and slow and thoughtful way you talk about the different ideas you want to convey. I would have gotten a lot more out of it if you had included perhaps a five minute meditation, not one where I have to pause and lose your virtual company, but one where you stay with me and don’t say a lot, don’t ask me to visualize anything more than the pathway, but where you guide me into it through breathing and maybe remind me part way through to remember my breath or some such thing and then gently bring me out again. I find I really need to have that meditative part to be able to really get anywhere with the lessons. Many thanks for your work. [REPLY to your comment: Thank you. Both for the recommendation of the meditation and for listening carefully to my thoughts. I’ll pop over to you page and meditation. 🪷] [SECOND REPLY Strange! I just added your for “Celtic“ tracks to one of my playlists and I went to listen to them and before my eyes they disappeared from the list. Do you not have them anymore? I got them from one of your playlists.] [THIRD REPLY ! Thanks, Judith. I have followed your playlist — a suitable alternative — but I tried adding them to one of my playlists again just now. When I checked to see if they were there — they were, for about one second, and then all at once they disappeared again. I will just leave it at that, but I’ve never seen that happen before. I just wonder if you have some setting on your tracks that bars them from being put into playlists. Anyway, I won’t worry about it anymore. I have access to them in a different way. Be well! And thank you again. 🪲]

After my recent hysterectomy I felt so many unresolved losses becoming more focused in my mind. Originally I felt this course could help me cope with the loss experienced post surgery, although not created with this in mind I have found it very helpful, however the main benefit has been for me to be able to unleash the emotions attached to previous bereavements that I could not process at the time. Such a helpful course I would recommend even if it is not a recent loss or even if it is a loss of something rather than someone. Thank you 🙏

Thank you so much for these sessions. You have helped me forgive myself for the death of my dog when it truly was an unfortunate accident. And taking comfort in nature has always been a source of peace for me, but I so appreciate the reminder to do so when I have been so mired in guilt and loss. The refuge of the many joyful memories and purity of the joyful love that existed between us has really helped my healing process. Thank you and namaste. 🙏🏻

I strongly recommend those who lost everything in a house fire NOT listen to the “element of fire” talk. This course - as all the other 4 IT courses I’ve gone through - focuses on losing some ONE not every THING ( including pets). Please -grief workers - open your definition of grief. Of the 5 grief courses I’ve gone through - this one is the most calming, and helpful. I really had to struggle with the “ there’s no place for me here.” I did finish.

This course was quite helpful in dealing with my own long-term illness and the grief that accompanies the loss of abilities and experiences. It has also given me tools to deal with the loss of my mother and impending loss of my father and beloved elderly dog.
