Australian Indigenous Spirituality: The Root Of All World Religions

With Mayur Katariya

What if the key to a more connected and mindful life lies in ancient wisdom, we've overlooked? This course explores the spiritual traditions of Indigenous Australians, with a focus on the practice of Dadirri—a deep form of listening and contemplation. It also examines parallels between Indigenous spirituality and other global wisdom traditions, such as Zen Buddhism, Vedic traditions, and Christian mysticism. By the end of the course, learners will develop a deeper understanding of Indigenous spirituality, its holistic worldview, and how these practices can be integrated into their personal and spiritual lives. This is not just a journey into history—it may transform the way you approach your own spiritual and personal growth. This is a lesson in why the wisdom of Indigenous cultures remains profoundly relevant today, for all of us.

Mayur, a seasoned meditator with over 25 years of dedicated practice in Advaita Vedanta, Nonduality, Vipassana, and Mindfulness meditation, brings a rich blend of spiritual insight and professional expertise to this course. Holding a Master's in Counselling alongside dual academic qualifications—a Bachelor's in Engineering and a Master's in IT—Mayur applies an evidence-based and discerning approach to his spiritual exploration. Currently a manager at a leading Australian university, Mayur seamlessly combines his academic and professional expertise with his spiritual journey. This harmony between the worlds of intellect and introspection forms the foundation of his teachings, including this course, Indigenous Spirituality: The Root of All Religions. Born in India, Mayur’s upbringing was deeply influenced by diverse spiritual traditions. His migration to Australia further expanded his perspective, allowing him to explore how cultural heritage, identity, and colonisation shape our understanding of the world and spirituality. This dual lens as an Australian Indian brings a unique depth to his reflections on Indigenous wisdom and its universal truths. With this course, Mayur invites participants to reflect on the universal essence of spirituality, recognising Indigenous wisdom as a profound guide to understanding our interconnected existence. His commitment to honouring the cultural, spiritual, and place-based heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is paired with a deep respect for their teachings, including the work of Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr, shared here with her foundation’s permission. Through this course, Mayur offers a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern understanding, inspiring reflection, respect, and connection to the spiritual truths that unite humanity.

Lesson 1

Dadirri: Deep Inner Listening And Still Awareness

This chapter on Dadirri, or 'deep inner listening and still awareness,' is inspired by the work of Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr, whose teachings have introduced this profound practice to many. By the end of the chapter, the listeners will understand the concept of Dadirri and its significance in Aboriginal spirituality and learn mindfulness and contemplative practices inspired by Dadirri. This is a lesson in why the ancient wisdom of Indigenous cultures remains profoundly relevant today. Aunty says, “Dadirri recognises the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us. There is no need of words. A big part of Dadirri is listening” (Miriam Rose Foundation, 2021).

Such a profound series reflecting my own sense of all religions being similar in their belief systems and reflecting Source or God as a higher power, the interconnection of all beings and Mother Nature. Thank you for enlightening about the Australian Aboriginal perspective and beliefs. I feel a sense of shame about the impact of colonisation on the First Nations peoples and want to find ways to join with them to help bring about reconciliation.
