Overwhelmed: Rest Practices For Kids

With Amy DiSanto

Children today are navigating a world filled with stimulation: screens, notifications, busy schedules, school, noise, transitions, social demands, and constant input. Sometimes, it can simply be a lot. This course is not about eliminating big feelings or making children calm. It offers children and caregivers simple ways to pause, notice, reconnect, and explore rest in a busy, highly stimulating world. Created for caregivers and educators, the lessons and experiences can be used with individual children, siblings, small groups, or whole classrooms. Through short lessons and guided experiences, children practice listening, breathing, moving, noticing, imagining, and resting. They are invited to explore what it feels like to slow down and make a little more space for whatever is happening, without needing to fix, change, or figure everything out. Caregivers and educators are welcome to join the experiences alongside children. Practicing together can create a shared moment of slowing down, connection, and rest. There is no need for the adult to make anything happen. You can simply listen, participate, and explore together. With repetition, these experiences can become familiar. Children can discover different ways of pausing and resting and begin to notice which practices feel supportive and useful to them. Over time, they can build a personal repertoire of simple practices to return to as life gets busy or transitions arise. There is no single right way to rest. A child might wiggle, laugh, keep their eyes open, change positions, lose interest, or come back to a practice another day. All of it is welcome. The invitation is simple: explore, listen, notice, and find what helps create a little more space. A little space can go a long way.

Lesson 8

Practice: Rest Journey

This playful guided rest journey begins with movement and choice, inviting children to shake out their wiggles, find a comfortable resting shape, and notice the space around them. From there, we explore imagination through a personal peace place and connect with the breath through a simple counting game. A gentle way to bring body, breath, awareness, and imagination together, with plenty of room to move, change position, or simply rest. As you continue exploring rest together, you can return to the parts that feel supportive and find small ways to bring these moments of pause, choice, and connection into everyday life. And if these practices have invited you to explore rest for yourself, you’re welcome to continue that journey with Amy’s adult courses, Begin Each Day with Heart and The Permission is Yours.
