Welcome,
My name is Sandhya.
What is the window of tolerance?
The window of tolerance is a zone that you can be in when your emotions are balanced and controlled.
A time when you're thinking clearly and reacting rationally.
When you're within your window,
You might still feel stress or sadness or frustration,
But you can stay grounded,
Able to think clearly.
However,
When stress pushes you outside that window,
The nervous system may move upward into something that's called hyperarousal.
And this might come out as feeling anxious,
Restless or overwhelmed.
Or you might go the other way,
Downward,
Into what is called hypoarousal.
And that's where you're feeling numb,
Shut down or disconnected.
Neither state is wrong,
But both of these states are protective responses.
And the goal of the nervous system work isn't to eliminate stress,
It's to widen your window of tolerance so that you can manage stress and emotions more easily.
However,
Do bear in mind that people with trauma,
Stress,
PTSD,
The window of tolerance can be much narrower and it can feel that more emotions and situations are intense and difficult to manage.
So we can begin to widen our window through small repeated acts of self-regulation.
That might be breathing in and out slowly and consciously.
And particularly allowing the exhale to be longer than the inhale.
This helps to calm our nervous system down.
We can do grounding through the body.
So that might be through body scan,
Who started at the top of the head,
Being aware of the body all the way down to your hands,
All the way down to your toes.
Or maybe doing something like gently stroking your arm or your hand to calm the nervous system down.
So if you'd like some tracks to help with that,
You might enjoy my NSDR,
NSDR,
Non-sleep deep rest,
Or any of my overwhelm tracks.
Thank you for listening.
