The mental texture of a session often changes as it goes on, and that shift shows up in the body too. During Conscious Connected Breathing, EEG recordings caught measurable changes in brainwave activity alongside a lift in mood in healthy adults (Bahi et al., 2023), which many people feel as thoughts becoming less sticky and a lighter mood once the breathing settles.
Early–emerging evidence supports Conscious Connected Breathing, with the more established signal coming from breathwork as a whole. A meta-analysis of breathwork broadly, not this technique specifically, found a small-to-moderate reduction in stress versus non-breathwork controls (Hedges' g = -0.35, 95% CI -0.55 to -0.14), meaning the average person who practised reported lower stress than roughly six in ten of those who did not, with comparable small reductions in anxiety and low mood (Fincham et al., 2023). Direct studies of connected breathing are smaller: an online trial linked it to lower self-rated anxiety against a waitlist (Blake, 2024), a ten-person proof-of-concept reported reduced pain in adults with chronic pain (Pratscher et al., 2025), and several studies show it can bring on altered states of consciousness that some people find meaningful (Havenith et al., 2025), (Fincham et al., 2026). Not yet supported: large controlled trials of this specific practice, lasting follow-up, and any claim that it treats or replaces care for a diagnosed condition.
Racing, restless anxiety may ease with Conscious Connected Breathing. In an early controlled study, people who practised online reported a much larger drop in their own anxiety ratings than people who simply waited (Blake, 2024), and broader breathwork research points the same way (Fincham et al., 2023).
Some sessions open into vivid, meaningful shifts in awareness, where the usual sense of time, self, and boundaries loosens. In studies that measure these altered states, connected breathing can produce experiences resembling those reported with psychedelics, and the stronger the state, the greater the drop in carbon dioxide from sustained fast breathing (Havenith et al., 2025), (Bahi et al., 2023), (Fincham et al., 2026).
The wound-up, pressured feeling of a stressful stretch can ease a little with regular breathwork. Across pooled trials, adults who practised breathing techniques reported modestly lower stress than those who did not (Fincham et al., 2023). That evidence covers breathwork broadly, not Conscious Connected Breathing on its own, so treat it as a promising signal rather than proof for this specific practice.
The firmest finding comes from breathwork in general: pooled randomized trials link breathing practices to modest reductions in stress, anxiety, and low mood, though those trials cover many techniques rather than connected breathing on its own (Fincham et al., 2023). Research on this specific practice is younger and smaller, with individual studies reporting lower cortisol during a session, reduced anxiety against a waitlist, and altered states that track the fall in carbon dioxide as people breathe (Heyda et al., 2025), (Blake, 2024), (Havenith et al., 2025). The main limits are straightforward: most trials are small or uncontrolled, and one larger controlled trial found fast breathwork no better than an active breathing comparison, so the picture is suggestive but not yet settled (Fincham et al., 2024).

Effects of conscious connected breathing on cortical brain activity, mood and state of consciousness in healthy adults

Conscious Connected Breathing grew out of the transpersonal and body-psychotherapy breathwork movements of the twentieth century, most visibly Holotropic Breathwork developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof and Rebirthing developed by Leonard Orr (Grof et al., 2010), (Young et al., 2010). Breathwork Interventions for Adults with Clinically Diagnosed Anxiety Disorders: A Scoping Review
