Develop A Forgiveness Practice

With Peacebeam

I have come to a time in life where there are likely less days ahead than there are behind me, and it has taken me quite some time to realise that forgiveness does not adapt itself to our timetables or goal setting, or expectations. I have had a very varied life and experience and, like most of you, have had a great deal to be forgiven for and to forgive. I have found that the expectations created through my journeying through personal development and self-help led me to believe that I could and should be able to process the events of my life quickly, efficiently and neatly, and that the mind can always determine outcome. It has been in the practice of forgiveness that I have been blessed with the understanding that forgiveness, like all things good, true, and beautiful, is a grace and a presence which we cannot command, but we can cooperate with. This realisation dawned slowly over many years of recurring disappointment when I would find myself angry, irritated, and dejected by the fact that something I thought I had ‘dealt with’ surfaced again, not once, but many times. So, throughout this course, our only goal is to engage with the presence and energy of forgiveness and to develop the 'heartset' and tools that will allow forgiveness to become a practice rather than a goal. When we set specific outcomes or expectations around forgiveness, we can limit its restorative, healing action. Throughout the course we will be seeking to meet forgiveness on its own terms, according to its timetable and kindness. Forgiveness lives in the landscape of the heart and has no use for reasons or objectives, or for perfection. Rather, the landscape of the heart is deep with generosity, wide with unthinkable possibility, and bathed in kindness, especially for yourself. In the endeavour of forgiveness, kindness to yourself is the most important ingredient. And to have kindness work with you, you must come with no agenda. Then, it can move and breathe and live you into what you need at this time in your life. Over the next 10 days we will look at what forgiveness means to you, what it is and is not, and how unconscious beliefs about ourselves form our attitudes to forgiveness. Finally, we will spend some time working through different levels of forgiveness and learning the basis of a daily examination practice that I hope will accompany you through your life. This course is for you if you have found yourself meeting your past over and over again in recurrent patterns, if you are angry with yourself for not being able to forgive, and if you want to meet yourself with kindness, compassion. It's also for you if you want to move from the field of your mind, intention, and goal setting to the field of your heart, intuition, and receptivity. There are 10 sessions. Each session is approximately 10 to 15 minutes long. In each session we will contemplate an aspect of forgiveness, and you will be asked to journal about the experience. You will need a pen or pencil and a notebook. I will be in the classroom each day answering any questions you may have. I hope that you will join us and invite the astonishing power and tenderness of forgiveness into your life.

Lesson 1

What Does Forgiveness Mean to You?

Today we consider the power of language, the way that some words drag memory, emotion, thoughts, images, whole cosmoses of meaning in their wake. We will spend some time with the word "forgiveness" and what it means to you personally. When we start with accepting what the word forgiveness creates in us, and allow ourselves to accept that we begin the process of creating a forgiveness practice. Time to journal is part of today's session.

Lesson 2

What Forgiveness Is

Having taken time in yesterday's session to explore your personal relationship to forgiveness, in today's session we look at the power of time in relation to forgiveness. We take on some constructive statements about what kindness is when we allow time and space for it to take hold as a practice. In this session you will be asked to write down some statements about forgiveness that will form the basis of your contemplation between now and the next session.

Lesson 3

What Forgiveness Isn't

In the last session we looked at what is true and possible about forgiveness. Today we look at common myths about forgiveness that many of us have absorbed unconsciously. In particular, we look at the power of the word "justice" and how that is connected to many misunderstandings about forgiveness. There is a journalling exercise included in this session.

Lesson 4

On Victim Consciousness

In this session we explore the uncomfortable word "victim" and the ways in which we can become stuck in victim consciousness, which may prevent us from engaging with a practice of forgiveness. We look at how we can move from victim to victor without ignoring our own story, or engaging with any unkindness around letting go or getting over things. This session includes journalling practices.

Lesson 5

On The Power Of Choice

Having covered some challenging subjects in the first 4 sessions and arrived at the half way mark, in today's session we look at the power of choice in relation to forgiveness and how we can choose to become powerfully forgiving beings. This session includes a visualisation and a writing exercise.

Lesson 6

What Is Truth?

Today we are going to consider the word "truth". Like forgiveness, justice, and victim, this is another power word that draws with it memories, ideas, concepts, and feelings. Distinguishing between what is true for us personally and objective truth is one of the most useful skills we can develop in our practice of forgiveness. Today's session includes a journalling exercise.

Lesson 7

Forgiving Level 1

Sessions 7, 8, and 9 are devoted to building the practical practice of forgiveness. The format of these sessions is slightly different: we will begin with a guided visualisation, followed by two journalling exercises. In this session we deal with a Level 1 incident, which is a minor incident that has caused irritation and annoyance and needs forgiving, but which you feel can be forgiven fairly easily.

Lesson 8

Forgiving Level 2

Sessions 7, 8, and 9 are devoted to building the practical practice of forgiveness. The format of these sessions is slightly different: we will begin with a guided visualisation, followed by two journalling exercises. Today we will work with a Level 2 incident, which involves a significant event or person - perhaps, a row with a friend, colleague, or family member. This may be a little more difficult to forgive, and you would like to forgive it or be forgiven, but it keeps lingering.

Lesson 9

Forgiving Level 3

Sessions 7, 8, and 9 are devoted to building the practical practice of forgiveness. The format of these sessions is slightly different: we will begin with a guided visualisation, followed by two journalling exercises. In this session we will be working with a major event, a situation that has hurt you deeply, that has been bothering you for some time, and that triggers strong emotions when you think about it.

Lesson 10

Forgiving In Real Time

In this final session, we wrap up the course by putting in place a daily examination practice that will allow us to forgive in real time, keep our energy systems flowing, and allow us to leave each day examined and with the process of acceptance and forgiveness constantly engaged.

A beautiful course that resonated deeply. The analogies were poignant and so helpful. The island with the prison for which we hold the key was truly memorable so too was the cleansing at the end of each day. There’s so much to learn that I will repeat the course to try to take every piece of your wisdom into the future. Thank you.

I am pleasantly surprised to actually be on a path of forgiveness after taking this course. This practice offered the needed tools and logic that I was seeking. In time, will be so grateful to be able to release this annoying and sometimes debilitating negative energy that I’ve been carrying around for years. Thank you!
