Worthy: Mindfulness For Survivors

With Jeanne Smith

My vision for this course is to bring the healing benefits of mindfulness practice, nervous system regulation exercises, and inquiry to people who have survived the trauma inflicted through domestic abuse, intimate partner violence, and emotional abuse. The post-traumatic symptoms of this type of abuse can manifest as a range of difficulties from not being able to trust oneself, challenges with self-forgiveness and acceptance, codependency, PTSD, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and hyper or hypo arousal. This class will address those difficulties by incorporating explanations of hyper and hypo arousal, the window of tolerance, and techniques for allowing one to stay within one’s own window of tolerance or zone of resilience. Because this type of abuse challenges one’s sense of worthiness and agency, sending Lovingkindness, Compassion, and Metta to oneself is also introduced and encouraged. The hope is that you will leave the course feeling greater agency, having worked with the tools for emotional regulation and practicing mindfulness and self-compassion. With this greater sense of awareness, you can expect to be more in tune with your own experiences and self-knowing. The practices aim to offer you a larger sense of self-worth and the ability to grow that self-worth from the inside out. The course will help you to be able to recognize thoughts as just thoughts and experience more spaciousness around intrusive and disturbing thoughts from the past or worries about the future. You can expect to leave the course with an established mindfulness practice and the inspiration to continue your journey of growing inner resources, presence, and self-love.

Meet your Teacher

Jeanne is a mindfulness mentor, meditation guide, actor, co-author, and writer. She is the founder and facilitator of As You Are Mindfulness, inviting meditators to come to the practice exactly as they are, without the pressure to change anything, so they can live from a place of greater connection, ease, and trust. She received her certification through Engaged Mindfulness Institute, which emphasizes sharing mindfulness in a trauma-informed way. As a survivor of intimate partner violence, she doesn't want anyone to feel isolated or stuck in cycles of shame, insecurity, and guilt. Mindfulness has had a transformative impact on her healing journey, and she is grateful for the opportunity to support others through the power of mindfulness. She wrote a play, Spider Play, largely about her own experiences with abuse, and produced a reading and talkback event in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The evening raised over $1,000 for organizations supporting survivors.

Lesson 2

Exploring Anchors

We begin this lesson by shaking, bouncing, and making sound. This is a simple way to release tension and regulate the nervous system. We reflect on various anchors that might be useful for our practice and serve as ways to stabilize us throughout the day. Our practice explores different anchors that include working with images, sounds, and words.

Lesson 3

Naming The Negativity Bias

We begin our practice with Straw Breathing, a simple breathing exercise that activates the parasympathetic nervous system. There is a discussion of the negativity bias and the work of Rick Hanson of "taking in the good." We practice Mindfulness of Body, Sensations, and Breathing while taking in the good of our practice and our intention, allowing it to be a source of joy for us. This lesson includes a reading by Rumi.

Lesson 4

Lovingkindness, Metta, And Self-Compassion

We begin regulating the nervous system by taking a minute or so to rub lotion into our hands and feet, an exercise offered by Resmaa Menakem in his book "My Grandmother's Hands." We reflect on metta, lovingkindness, and compassion for ourselves and others, and the ways we tend to show or not show ourselves compassion. We begin to explore this practice by offering kindness and well wishes to a benefactor, someone experiencing difficulties, and ourselves.

Closing Practices And Appreciation, Learning, And Commitment

What a gift it has been to practice together. Thank you so much for joining me and sharing your presence and generosity with me. This is a time to reflect on any insights from the practice and any gratitude, learning, or commitments you want to make as we close our time together in the course. We practice with Self-Forgiveness, an integral part of offering ourselves compassion, understanding, and love. You are worthy. Thank you for the opportunity to support your practice. This lesson includes a reading by Bapu-ji.
