Intermediate Buddhism: Vipassana - by Karen Anderson

COURSE

Intermediate Buddhism: Vipassana

With Karen Anderson

The Buddha taught 16 steps of mindfulness of breathing to take us all the way from the basics of knowing the breath to the deepest levels of insight. This course will explore practicing mindfulness in a way that is natural, highlighting our innate quality of awareness. Through kindness to ourself, encouraging well-being and trusting the process, we will slowly find our way to steadiness of mind. The key will be cultivating the ability to relax and let go. What we will discover is that distractions fall away, as well as the habits we all have that block our happiness. This course is for anyone, beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

Lesson 1

Introduction: What Is Sati?

We begin with the term mindfulness itself- a translation of the Pali word sati- and explore whether using the translation lucid awareness might lead us toward a practice that feels more natural and less effortful.

Lesson 2

Knowing Breathing (Steps 1 & 2)

We begin with the most basic instruction, knowing breathing. We lay this foundation as a way to begin to relax our usual mode of control and conceptualization, and to become aware of our experience in a lucid way. And so, this isn't just beginner practice, it's also profound.

Lesson 3

Experiencing The Body (Step 3)

Today we drop into our experience of the body. This is grounding and helps to draw us away from our thoughts about ourselves. It also supports our discovery of awareness itself. Getting to know awareness leads to a sense of being whole, of healing.

Lesson 4

Relaxing The Body (Step 4)

Every fourth step, we explicitly relax and calm our system. Today this happens through relaxing the body. This gives us the opportunity to release the sense of being the do-er, and instead to become receptive and more purely aware.

Lesson 5

Experiencing Well-being (Steps 5 & 6)

Our next step is experiencing well-being in the body and in the mind. While this may not always be what's happening, our practice so far has generally supported the natural arising of well-being. We can tune into this when it's present, and when it isn't, we can simply be with what's arising in a relaxed way.

Lesson 6

Experiencing Mental Formations (Step 7)

Today we turn to experiencing our thoughts. In order to deal with thought patterns that can be challenging, we introduce and highlight our capacity to care. It's this attitude of compassion and care that allows us to soften and see more clearly.

Lesson 7

Relaxing Mental Formations (Step 8)

Today we practice relaxing our thoughts, in particular the thoughts we use to define ourselves, our self-conscious thinking. Using the calm, well-being and insights that we've developed this far, we relax into letting go, not so much being the agent, but allowing a natural process.

Lesson 8

Experiencing The Mind (Step 9)

Today we begin to directly look at the wider sense of the mind itself. Getting in touch with the quality of our inner being, and offering care and attention to what we find, can be a new habit that we create for ourselves.

Lesson 9

Gladdening The Mind (Step 10)

We can gladden our mind in mindfulness practice by connecting to the natural warmth of our heart, uncovering ways in which we are discouraging our own happiness, and finding satisfaction in simple presence.

Lesson 10

Steadying The Mind (Step 11)

We're moving toward healing, toward wholeness, toward unification. We can't force samadhi, instead, we let go of it, we relax into it. What we discover isn't something new layered on our being, but rather the absence of afflictions.

Lesson 11

Liberating The Mind (Step 12)

As the mind settles, we have the opportunity to free ourselves from the things that pull the mind away from peace and clarity. We begin to relax our concepts, including thoughts about who we are and what we think of ourselves.

Lesson 12

Observing Impermanence (Step 13)

In the final tetrad we observe dharmas, deep processes within that are activated to lead us toward suffering or freedom. Seeing impermanence directly helps us loosen and let go of our deep fears and identities that we hold on to and live by.

Lesson 13

Observing Dispassion (Step 14)

When we’re simple with the breath, we give ourselves the opportunity to not pile stories, ideas, judgments and criticisms on top of what’s happening. This keeps the heart and the mind clear and open, allowing something deeper to unfold.

Lesson 14

Observing Cessation (Step 15)

The third noble task of the Buddha is to observe the ceasing of reactivity. Since everything is changing, everything eventually comes to an end. Observing cessation is powerful, as it truly convinces the mind that things change, that suffering ends.

Lesson 15

Observing Relinquishment (Step 16)

As the mind and heart become clear, and space and stillness emerge, a decisiveness arises that we don’t buy into our old, unwholesome patterns anymore. As we stop feeding these patterns, something unravels and gives way deep inside. We relinquish our old way of being.

This is such an excellent and clear guide into the process of using the guidelines laid out in the teachings of Buddah in the anapanasati. Karen shares her deep understanding of how each step takes us into developing calm, joy and finally wisdom. Nothing esoteric or other worldly, just the breath, attention and a trust in the process.

This course was excellent. It introduced me to the Anapanasati Sutta for the first time, and triggered some additional study. The instructor does an excellent job walking the student through each step, and I left each session with a better understanding. The only thing that feels like it's missing is a final, long meditation where the instructor walks the student through all four tetrads in one sitting.

I will take this course again. I used to find mindfulness of breathing difficult and boring. Now it is more where I want to be.

This is one of the best courses I have taken on Insight Timer. Karen explains and teaches Anapanasati with clarity, kindness and care and I found myself listening and relistening to the lessons because of the wisdom she shares. I feel that my understanding of Buddhism and clear seeing has changed in a gentle and distinct way that I didn’t fully grasp before this course. Thank you, Karen, for the time you put into creating this course.

I liked the structure of the course. I follow it each session with twenty minute unguided practice. It’s been great to start a regular practice for myself and intend to repeat it again.

On finishing this course, I look forward to immediately starting it again. Very insightful perspective. Thank you for several "gifts" in this course that truly unlocked a new level of experience in my practice. Specifically, the idea of "easy" has become a valuable touchstone for me. Again, thank you.

A wonderful teaching of the sixteen exercises of mindful breathing. I had read the instruction and do the practice offered by Plum Village, but your course is much more in depth. I took lots of notes and plan on revisiting those to deepen my practice. There are some differences in each exercises step names, but your exercises are very similar to Plum Village’s in practice. I prefer Plum Village’s first two steps: Breathing in I know I am breathing in….. and Breathing in I follow the whole length of the inbreath…. But for the rest of the steps I prefer your wording, particularly for exercises 15 and 16; Breathing in I contemplate the no-birth no-death nature of all that is…. vs your Observing cessation…. and Breathing in I let go of the idea that I am this body…. vs your Observing relinquishment…. Thanks for sharing this course with us.

Thank you for this course Karen. 🙏 There is a lot of content and I think I will need to listen again to get the most from it. Although there was a medition with each days session, I think the course would be improved with perhaps a session on how the process and stages can be incorporated into a whole process or sitting. Thank you so much for putting this course together, I learnt loads! 🙏🪷😊🧘🏻‍♂️

Although concepts are not new Karen’s presentation has helped me gain new observations and supported deeper curiosity in my meditation practice. I would encourage anyone to take this course regardless of the amount of meditation that has been their life experience.
