There is no anchor object and no sequence to move through. A systematic review of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in recurrent depression found meta-awareness and reduced rumination among the mechanisms tied to better outcomes (Velden et al., 2015). The signal is not uniform: in a meta-analysis of 88 trials, the observing facet of mindfulness, how much people report noticing inner experience, was only weakly related to outcomes, with a correlation near 0.16, a reminder that noticing alone does not promise benefit (Quaglia et al., 2016).
