Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.
You join me here down at Hope Cove on a golden sandy beach as the waves make their way in,
Washing up onto the shoreline.
I can see a family with a little girl in wellington boots excitedly paddling in the waves and a few other children on the beach here building sandcastles,
But everyone is wrapped up warm with hats and gloves and coats.
It's been a cold day today and we walk today from a place called Wannell which is on the opposite side of the urn to Mothercombe which is where we finished off yesterday and if you remember I'm on a 10-day hike walking the South Hams Way.
It's a hundred mile hike around the beautiful countryside and coastline that makes up the South Hams area of Devon and today with my sister and my friend we knew it was going to be a tough walk along the coast path,
Very steep slopes to climb up and then very steep descents as well which are also quite hard to manage and then the rain came in and it got very cold and we got damp and we came across a cafe and it was the most delightful respite from the cold icy rain to get a cup of tea and just to sit for half an hour and allow that rain to pass over and one of the absolutely mesmerizing times of the day for me was on one of the steep descents we made our way to a beach called West Combe Beach and as I walked down onto the beach there was something about the roll of the waves coming in that hypnotized me.
I couldn't take my eyes off the waves as they came into the beach and I kept watching them and listening to them.
They were soothing like a lullaby and I've been reflecting on them today,
This sense of the waves,
The consistency of the waves,
They're constant,
Eternal,
Timeless,
Coming in,
Crashing on the shore and then I was reminded that each wave looks individual as it comes in and they break into the white horses,
The frothy tops and they look like they're separate and individual and yet they're all part of the ocean.
I thought what a wonderful metaphor that is,
As a reminder of what it is that we are.
We are all part of the energy of life,
Of God energy,
We are part of that ocean of energy and we are individual like the waves,
We seem to have our own individual fate and destiny as we make our way to the shore so we are both individual but connected,
All of us and I love that and on one of the parts of the walk as we were walking on the edge of a golf course I realized that there were the golfers on the golf course,
Each of them individually focusing on their game of golf and I'm sure some of them were not having a good day because the golf was hard and some of them were scoring well and having a great day and we were walking along the coast path,
Me,
My sister and my friend,
All of us in our own individual little thought bubbles and I just realized how we have this sense of separateness,
All of us separate realities,
We're all living in a separate,
Seemingly separate universe and yet ultimately we are like the waves,
We are all connected and in this separate universe I asked my friend and my sister what they loved during the day and my sister said oh it was the black thorn blossoms,
These white bushes covered in soft pale blossoms,
She said I loved looking at them and my friend she said oh it was the ferry journey,
We caught a foot ferry across the river Avon and it was a short trip,
Probably no more than five or ten minutes but she was buzzing with the joy of being on the water and catching the ferry and seeing the river from a different view and I just realized we are all so different,
We're all having a different experience of life and yet it is the same life,
It's like the ocean comes in and the waves crash against the beach and every single wave is having its own life,
It's different and yet ultimately it is connected to the same source as are we,
So today is just a reflection that we are all connected to the same source,
We are all connected to the energy of life,
It's not that we're connected to it,
It's like saying the are connected to the ocean,
The waves are the ocean and we are that source and I for one think that's a really good thing to remember.
Don't forget to join me again tomorrow for another five minutes in nature,
I'm with you every day and also if you enjoy these five minutes in nature why not tell your friends and invite them to spend five minutes a day with me as I explore out and about both the natural world and some philosophical reflections as well,
I'd love to welcome everyone along.
