Discover the hidden wisdom of nature as Liz Scott reflects on the profound interconnectedness of life in this woodland exploration. Amid the dim light of a misty winter evening, Liz observes the ivy-clad and moss-covered trees standing individually yet deeply connected through an unseen mycelium network beneath the soil. This underground web of fungi fosters cooperation and resilience, reminding us that, despite appearances, we are not separate beings but part of a vast, interconnected ecosystem. Join Liz in contemplating the power of connection and the realization that we are never truly alone.

Hello and welcome to five minutes in nature with me Liz Scott and the invitation this January is that you join me every day to learn from nature and her wisdom and just to give yourself five minutes of reflection.

It's probably oh about four o'clock in the afternoon and it's getting dimpsy now I don't know if you know that phrase dimpsy I think it might be a Devon phrase I live in the UK in Devon and it means that it's kind of moving from daylight to darkness but it's a gradual decline of light so there's a mistiness in the air there's a real sense of drizzle in the air and the light is gradually dipping away it's at a very grey time and I'm standing in a wood I've gone for a walk in a woodlands and I'm just pausing and looking at these trees standing in the woodland now even though the trees are bare there is this wealth of green here because many of the trees are covered in ivy and ivy is covering them up with a green and I can see also alongside the ivy on the trunks of the trees are a lighter lime colour of moss that is also creeping up the trees so even though we're in the midst of winter even though the light is grey the colours around the oranges of the leaves the green of the ivy and this lovely lime green of the moss against the dark brown of the trunks and today my reflection as I look at these trees all standing individually there's hazel there's beech there are oak trees there are probably other trees that I don't know the names of but each tree is standing resolutely in this woodland and it just reminded me of sometimes what it is like to stand in the world now when I stand in the world there is a time where I a bit like maybe a tree here in the woodland looks around and sees all these other individual trees it looks like all the trees are separate from one another they are all different and they are all doing their own thing but we know deep in the soil as the roots go into the soil we know that there is a network of mycelium now I don't exactly know what mycelium look like but what I imagine is that they are like a network like a spider's web network beneath the earth of fungi fungi that connects beneath the earth and not only does this network of fungi live beneath the soil it is connected to the trees and so the trees are connected not just to the ground but they are connected to each other through this network of mycelium and what's so incredible about this network of mycelium is this network fosters cooperation and resilience in this woodland it enhances the health and stability of the whole ecosystem it's like a vast underground network and it connects trees and plants and that is the wisdom I see today which is about connection in a world where we all seem so individual and we all seem so separate and we are all doing our own thing in the world actually the truth is different and it might be out of range of sight of our eyes but there is a network and a connection of energy a bit like the mycelium here in the woodland that connects us we are not individual beings having separate experiences in life we are connected much more deeply and are connected to each other ask yourself the question am I really a separate individual finding my way in a lonely kind of way through the world or am I actually connected at a deeper more intuitive level to the whole of life itself what would it be like to realize that you like the mycelium here in the woodland floor what would it be like to realize you are not alone we are all connected
