Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott out and about in Scotland.
I'm visiting the Balgon Lakes today.
They're not far outside of North Berwick and I've cycled here,
Had a cup of tea,
Left my bike in the car park of the cafe and I'm now strolling around these lakes.
I think there's probably about a two mile stroll around them and I am so enjoying what I'm seeing.
I'm not used to walking around fresh water and the reeds are very high here.
There are butterflies,
There are ducks,
There are other water birds on the lake itself.
There's woodland around and I've been listening to the different calls of different birds.
If I just stand here now I can see the shimmer of the sun on the water and then the tall reeds in front of it swaying in the breeze.
And then there's the white of meadow sweet and then there's a purple of what looks like some kind of thistle flower peeping up in the undergrowth around the lakes.
Everything feels quite calm and settled.
You might hear people go by on their bicycles or families walking by or dog walkers go by but other than that I feel pretty much here enjoying this right on my own.
I'd cycled in across a very bumpy field and wondered if there was another way to cycle out again.
And when I asked the lady in the cafe,
Is there another way out of the car park or which way would she recommend to leave the car park?
She said,
Well,
That rather depends where you're heading.
And I smiled in a way because I don't really have a plan today.
I'm not heading anywhere.
I'm just going where I feel like.
I said,
Well,
I don't really know where I'm going,
But I came in through that field and I'd rather like to go out a different way.
And she said,
Well,
You probably want to go out this way then.
But her words got me thinking and the direction of travel depends where you're heading.
It's so true,
Isn't it?
And often in life,
I have a real sense of where I am heading,
But today I don't.
Today is,
Is just one of these let's see where I'm drawn to go and it reminds me in a way of just how I feel in my life right at this moment if you were to take a snapshot of my life at the moment where do I feel I'm going or which direction am I traveling in and I mean this in a philosophical and allegorical kind of way where am I going in my life at the moment I don't really know it feels a bit like the bike ride I'm on today it feels as though I'm just sort of following my nose and seeing where I turn up.
And at the moment it's wonderful.
I've turned up at these lakes.
I was recommended to come and visit them by a local of North Berwick who said before you go you must see the lakes at Balgon.
So I've come down here and so pleased I followed her advice.
And I'm wondering,
Can I live life like this?
Can I live life with a sense of just following my nose,
Following my intuition?
I recently listened to a chap called Bill Pettit,
And one of the things he talks about is coming back to the stillness and being guided by intuition.
And when I heard him say that,
Something in me just went,
Ah,
It's like a real sense of relief,
A sense of yes,
This feels right.
Come back to the stillness and be guided from there.
That holds a lot of truth for me at the moment.
But what that does is it doesn't actually show me where I'm heading in my life.
It gives me a direction to look in,
But I have no sense of where I'm heading.
So I'm curious about this today,
This dance between looking within to the stillness.
This idea of being led by intuition.
How much can I be led by intuition?
Is that something that can happen?
All of my life?
Is that possible?
So for me it feels important to look at this guide within,
This intuition,
To find the stillness within me and then to find my direction in life.
I don't know where I'm heading.
But I do know I can look within and get a sense of my inner compass.
I'd be ever so curious to know what you feel about this,
This sense of where you're going in your life.
Do you have a clear sense of direction?
Or do you find yourself guided by intuition?
Let me know your reflections.
And of course,
Don't forget to join me again tomorrow for another five minutes in nature.
