When life happens, we tend to (partly) bury our wishes, desires and guilty pleasures deeply because we think something else is expected from us. In this meditation, Femke guides you to meeting and getting to know your inner rebel, and learning from its benign and loving presence that you can choose to (sometimes) be rebellious. This audio is created after Femke's very popular Live Meditation on Insight Timer. Many meditators loved the Inner Rebel and wanted to revisit this meditation.

Hello friends,

This is Femke,

And welcome at this meditation where we are going to release your inner rebel.

What do I mean with an inner rebel?

Well,

Your inner rebel is that voice within,

That protests when you are doing things that you actually don't want to do.

When you are in the rush of your life and you feel that you're in the middle of have-tos and shoots and musts,

But actually you feel within,

That you would like to do something else.

But you don't,

Because you have learned to live up to the expectations of the people around you,

The expectations of the peanut gallery,

The expectations of society.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

We cannot always live our lives and just do whatever we want to do.

We have made decisions in our lives,

And with making that decision comes responsibility.

However,

If we don't spend enough time with ourselves listening to this voice within that tells us what we do want to do,

What we dream of,

What we desire,

What is good for us,

What fills our hearts,

What inspires us.

Then we sometimes lose track of ourselves.

So I created this meditation for you to take a moment and to connect with your inner rebel,

And to connect with your dreams,

Your wishes,

Your guilty pleasures,

To connect with this side of you that enjoys life,

That feels free to allow itself to dream and to be inspired.

So let's start.

Sit comfortably with your back upright.

Relax your face,

Your jaw,

Your shoulders,

You can put your hands in your lap.

Settle and relax.

Let's close our eyes.

Deep even breath.

Really filling your lungs on the inward breath and fully letting go of everything on the outward breath.

Fully breathing in and breathing out,

Just let all the air out of your lungs.

And with the next outward breath,

Relax into this outward breath,

Extend your outward breath.

So breathe in and out and let go of everything.

And breathe in and breathe out and let go of everything.

Breathe in and extend your outward breath.

Okay.

Now imagine there is a staircase in front of you and this staircase is leading down.

And when I say imagine,

It's not per se necessary to really see this within your mind's eye.

If you can,

Great.

But if you cannot then just follow my voice.

Just know that it's there.

Feel that it's there.

If you don't see it,

It doesn't mean that you cannot visualize,

It just means that you visualize in a different way.

And that's also a okay.

So imagine this staircase and we are going to descend it.

I will count the steps and with every step you feel that your body becomes more relaxed and your mind becomes more relaxed.

So one,

Two,

Your body is relaxing.

Three,

Four,

Your body feels relaxed.

Five,

Six,

All tension is released.

Seven,

Eight,

Letting go of any tension.

Nine,

Ten,

You're deeply relaxed.

Now take a look around you.

You have arrived in this really spacious room with white walls and actually there's not so much here.

It's pretty empty and it feels neutral.

And when you decide to walk into this space,

You see that in the middle there is a box.

How it looks is up to you,

But you know immediately that within this box is your inner rebel.

You feel a little bit excited that you're going to meet your inner rebel.

And when you approach the box,

You can see already the shape of a figure,

A being.

Maybe it's because it's a cage,

Maybe it's because your box has windows,

But you can start to see the shape of this figure and you start to see how it looks.

If it's a body with arms and legs,

If it looks like a human or that it looks more like an animal or a fantasy figure or another being that you have never ever seen before,

What color does it have?

How is it shaped?

Can you take a look at their face?

And when you are approaching,

It becomes more clear how they look.

Maybe you see yourself,

Maybe at a younger age when you were a teenager and you were taught to control your inner rebel,

Or maybe even younger than that.

Or maybe this is the hero from your childhood,

Or a pop star you admire.

Maybe it's just a wonderful dragon that smiles at you.

And that's something that you notice when you come closer,

That they are benign,

Friendly and relaxed.

They are inside,

Like trapped in this box,

But they look so relaxed and happy,

At ease,

Satisfied.

And at that moment you realize that although they are in a box,

They are not caged.

So when you approach,

You see there is a door,

But this door is open.

And you realize that your inner rebel could always come out,

But they didn't.

Out of respect for you.

You are now so close that you can look them in the eyes.

And you see that they are looking at you with so much love and so much understanding.

They don't judge you for keeping them in this box.

They don't fight with you because you are keeping them in this box.

They are here,

Out of respect for you.

So take a moment to greet them in a way that feels appropriate for you.

Maybe you just nod,

Maybe you smile,

Maybe you say hi,

Or maybe you walk up to them and give them a hug.

Take a moment to greet them in a way that feels good to you.

And since you are here and you see that they are so respectful of you and so benign,

Invite them to come out of the box for a moment.

Invite them in a way that feels good to you.

You can reach out to them,

You can give them your hand,

You can make a gesture,

You can nod,

Or you can tell them and invite them to come to you.

And see how relaxed and at ease they take your invitation and come closer to you.

Now you are standing in front of them and you are looking at them.

How exciting this is that you are standing in front of your inner rebel.

So the first question you are going to ask them is this.

Where do you want to be at this moment?

I let them tell you in their way,

Maybe they tell you in words,

Maybe they tell you with a vision,

Maybe they tell you because you smell something,

Maybe you just know.

And the moment they tell you where they want to be,

You see that these white walls around you fall down and you are in this place where your inner rebel wants to be.

Take a look around and see the beauty,

See the colors,

The shapes and smell for a moment.

What do you smell?

How lovely this place is.

And see maybe your inner rebel wants to tell you something about this place,

Where it is,

Why you are here.

Or maybe you just enjoy together by looking around.

The next question you are asking your inner rebel is this.

What is it that you want to do that I am not doing?

What is it that you want to do that I am withholding from you?

And again,

Feel how benign they are,

Feel how gentle they are,

That they don't judge you for not being able to do this.

Feel how this cage was out of respect for you and not to hold something back.

Now let them tell you this in their way,

In words,

In images,

In knowing,

In feeling.

Just take a moment and don't think too much about it,

Just let the first thing that pops up be it.

Maybe it's something small like snoozing your alarm for 5 minutes more in the morning.

Maybe it's something small and naughty like farting in public.

Maybe it's something big like going to your boss and telling your boss that you want to do something different with your work.

And maybe it's something brave like standing up to the peanut gallery when you think that they are expecting X and you want to do Y.

Take a moment to really hear and feel and see what your inner rebel would love you to do if it was up to your inner rebel.

And you know what?

Since this is your imagination and only you can see whatever you're doing here,

Do what your inner rebel would love you to do.

Grab them by the hand and do it.

If it's standing up to your boss,

Then stand together with your inner rebel and feel how they are supporting you,

Standing next to you,

Giving you the right words,

Giving you the right feeling to say whatever you want to say.

If it's doing something naughty in public,

Then do it together and feel how your inner rebel is there with you,

Supporting you,

Loving you,

Not condemning but loving you.

This is your imagination.

You can do whatever you want to do.

If your inner rebel wants you to fly up in the sky,

Open your wings and fly through the sky,

Do it.

You can do it.

This is your imagination.

And whatever it is that you're doing,

Connect with the feeling of joy.

Connect with the feeling of freedom.

Connect with the feeling of love.

Connect with the feeling of allowance,

How much you allow yourself to just be,

To be in tune with yourself,

To be in love with yourself.

Alright.

Was that fun?

And now,

The last question.

Ask your inner rebel what it is that they would like you to do for real the coming week.

Something rebellious that will make you feel good,

That will make you feel loved,

That will give you joy.

It can be really tiny,

Like putting the snoozer of your alarm clock again.

It can be ordering in while you promised everyone that you would cook tonight.

And it can be something big,

Something your heart is desiring,

Signing up for that dance class,

Climbing that mountain,

Making that hike while you actually should work,

Taking a day off to just binge watch a series.

Okay,

So now you know what your inner rebel would love you to do this week,

Something that you would also love to do this week.

And now decide together on a sign.

A sign that your inner rebel will give you to remind you to give this pleasure to yourself,

To remind you that you will give yourself this gift of freedom,

Even if it's only for a split second.

Maybe it's a thought that will pop up that you know,

Ha,

This is it.

Maybe it's something you will smell or see,

That yellow car racing by that will remember you,

Yes,

Now it's time for my little guilty pleasure.

Now it's time for my inner rebel to pop up.

Okay,

You know what's going to be the signal?

Good.

Decide,

Do you want to leave your inner rebel here in this place where they feel so good?

The place that they show to you as a place to be?

Or would you like them to go back to the cage?

Both is fine.

Do whatever feels comfortable for you.

And if you want to imagine a different place where you want your inner rebel to live,

That's great.

Because know that your inner rebel is at ease,

Waiting within you,

Till you will come and they are ready.

They are not impatient,

They are not angry,

They are not even wild,

They are respectfully waiting for you to connect and to bring them out whenever you want,

Because you have the control over your inner rebel.

The only thing you have to do is to invite them,

To join them on your conditions.

Okay,

When you decided where you will leave them,

Say goodbye to them.

And do this in a way that feels appropriate to you.

After you have said goodbye,

Let's take a moment to come to ourselves.

You can put your hands on your chest and imagine there is a light in your chest.

A beautiful bright warm light.

And while you put your attention there,

It starts to expand.

It's growing bigger than your heart,

Filling your chest,

Your arms and shoulders,

Your head,

Expanding your belly,

Your buttocks,

Your thighs,

Expanding and expanding,

Until you are in this big bubble of warm,

Pleasant,

Loving light that expanded from your chest.

And know that here in the middle of your chest,

Where all this light is coming from,

This is your core,

This is where your inner rebel resides.

This is the place where you can always connect with your inner rebel.

And while you're knowing this,

We're going to walk back to the stairs.

And we're going to climb the stairs and with every step that I count,

You're leaving behind the visualization and you're coming back to the here and now.

So ten,

Nine,

Eight,

Seven,

Six,

Five.

You can wheel your fingers and toes if you like.

Four,

Three,

You can stretch your spine.

Stretch your arms if you like.

Two,

One.

Keep your eyes closed for a moment.

And sit.

Fill your body.

Realize what you just did.

You connected with your core.

You connected with your inner rebel.

You connected with yourself,

With your desires and wishes.

With this spot within you where everything is alright,

Where there is no judgement,

Where there is freedom and love for you just as you are.

How wonderful is this?

And know that you can always come back here by putting your hands on your chest,

By closing your eyes,

Descending the stairs and going to this place,

This place where your inner rebel lives.

And while you're sitting with this knowing,

Then remind yourself again that your inner rebel is always respectful of you,

Is always part of you,

Loving you.

Okay.

Now take your time.

Just slowly open your eyes in your own time.

Now you have opened your eyes,

You might want to take some time to journal.

To journal about the insights about yourself that you picked up during this meditation.

You can write about your inner rebel.

You can reflect upon what you saw,

What you encountered.

To realize what is limiting you and to ask yourself the question if it's really necessary to be limited.

And to ask yourself the question if the limitations that you're sometimes putting on your inner rebel are really necessary.

Maybe they are,

But maybe they aren't.

Just take some time to reflect.

And of course feel free to revisit this visualization,

To revisit your inner rebel and to learn more about your true desires and wishes and how you can allow yourself to be as free as you can allow yourself to be.

Thank you so much for meditating with me today.

In gratitude and with love.

Until next time.

Oh wow, Femke... this meditation felt like a gift. It had been on my 'to listen to' list for a while. But I was a little worried that my inner rebel would be too overwhelming. This turned out to be absolutely not the case. It's nice that you have repeatedly provided reassurance that the inner rebel is benign. This allayed my (unfounded) fear. Thank you very much for this experience πŸ™πŸ» All the best, Annemiek

Excellent visualization. I see my inner rebel, the room, the box, what I can change, who I can see, and the sign that will pop up and remind. This was clear and resonant. I’m excited. Well done.

I loved your dialect. Soothing and safe. Thank you πŸ™πŸ» I appreciate this meditation in the midst of chaos in my life you brought me to the child who was free and happy. It felt so good. I left her in a beach cottage with sea air and joy in heart. She held my face in her hands and I know I am loved. Thank you πŸ™πŸ»
