You Don't Have To Know What's Next

With Dr Janette Freeman

We live in a world that constantly asks us to anticipate, prepare, and stay one step ahead. Many of us have learned to believe that peace will come when life becomes more certain. But what if peace doesn't require certainty? In this gentle 10-lesson course, meditation teacher and author Dr. Janette Freeman explores how to release the exhausting habit of carrying the future and discover a deeper sense of ease in the present moment. Through inspiring teachings, personal reflections, and guided meditations, you'll learn how to: • Calm the mind's need to know • Rest more comfortably in uncertainty • Meet fear with presence and compassion • Return to the present moment again and again • Cultivate a peace that does not depend on circumstances This course is for anyone feeling overwhelmed by uncertainty, change, overthinking, or the pressure to have everything figured out. You don't need all the answers to experience peace. You only need this moment.

Lesson 1

The Habit Of Looking Ahead

This lesson explores how the mind becomes conditioned to live just a little ahead of the present—planning, anticipating, and scanning for what might happen next. While this can feel responsible and protective, constantly living in the future creates tension and keeps us from fully experiencing the life that is happening now. The lesson invites us to notice when the mind has moved ahead and gently return to the present, discovering that we don’t have to know what’s next in order to feel peaceful right now.

Lesson 2

The Cost Of Needing Certainty

The desire for certainty is deeply human—we want to know what will happen, how things will work out, and that we’ll be okay. But when we depend on certainty to feel safe, the mind stays busy searching for answers, and the body remains subtly on alert. In this lesson, we explore the possibility that peace doesn’t require having everything figured out. We can begin to soften the demand for answers and discover that “I don’t know right now” can actually become a doorway to relief.

Lesson 3

The Myth That Peace Comes Later

Many of us unknowingly postpone peace by telling ourselves, “I’ll relax when this is over,” “I’ll feel better when things settle down,” or “I’ll enjoy life once I get through this.” But another goal, responsibility, or uncertainty is always waiting. In this lesson, we explore the possibility that peace is not a reward waiting at the end of a perfectly managed life. We can allow moments of ease, joy, and presence now—even while parts of our lives remain unfinished.

Lesson 4

Peace Is An Inner Orientation

We often think of peace as something we feel when life is going well—but if our peace depends entirely on circumstances, it can disappear with the next difficult conversation, unexpected change, or troubling news. In this lesson, we explore peace as something deeper: an inner orientation and a place within ourselves that we learn to return to. This doesn't mean we stop feeling fear, sadness, anger, or uncertainty. It means we discover that we can make room for all of our human experience while remaining connected to a deeper sense of steadiness within.

Lesson 5

Resting In The Unknown

Most of us are more familiar with tolerating uncertainty than actually resting in it. We wait for answers while our minds keep planning, predicting, and imagining what might happen. In this lesson, we explore the freedom of simply admitting, “I don’t know.” When we stop demanding an answer before one is available, we can release some of the tension surrounding uncertainty and begin to trust that we don’t have to meet tomorrow today. We can meet life one moment at a time.

Lesson 6

Letting Life Meet You

Sometimes our stress comes less from what is happening and more from what we are bracing for. We rehearse conversations, anticipate problems, and prepare ourselves emotionally for futures that haven’t arrived. In this lesson, we explore what it means to soften that guard and let life meet us where we are. This isn’t about becoming passive or unprepared; it’s about trusting our ability to respond when life actually arrives. We don’t need to meet life before it gets here.

Lesson 7

Returning To This Moment

The body is always here, but the mind can spend much of its time somewhere else: replaying the past or imagining the future. Returning to the present is not about forcing ourselves to stay perfectly mindful. The practice is simply noticing when we’ve left and gently coming back. Through the breath, the body, and our senses, we can return again and again to the one place where life is actually happening, and discover that this moment is often much more manageable than the future our minds are imagining.

Lesson 8

When Fear Visits

Fear is a natural part of being human, not a sign that we are failing or doing something wrong. It may arise around our health, finances, relationships, the people we love, or simply from imagining what could happen next. In this lesson, we practice a different relationship with fear: allowing it to be present without letting it take control. Rather than resisting fear or immediately obeying its urgency, we can acknowledge it, breathe with it, and remember: Fear is here, and I am here too.

Lesson 9

Living Peacefully In An Uncertain World

We live in a world that gives us an almost constant stream of information, uncertainty, and reasons to worry. Choosing peace doesn’t mean turning away from the world or caring less. It means learning how to stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed. In this lesson, we explore the difference between being informed and being consumed, between caring and carrying. When we protect our inner steadiness, we have more clarity, compassion, and presence to offer ourselves and others. We discover that peace is not indifference; it is steadiness.

Lesson 10

You Are Already Allowed To Rest

In this final lesson, we bring the entire journey together. We’ve practiced releasing the need to know, softening our guard, meeting fear differently, and returning again and again to the present moment. The final invitation is perhaps the simplest and most important: you do not have to earn your rest or wait until everything is resolved to experience peace. You were never meant to carry the future. When you forget, and we all will; the practice is simply to remember, come back to this moment, and know that you are already allowed to rest.
