Zhan Zhuang is a static standing practice, not a flowing movement form, so it differs from Tai Chi and moving Qigong sequences, where the body travels through changing postures. It is also distinct from seated or lying meditation, because the upright, weight-bearing stance is central to the work. Although it belongs to the same internal martial-arts world as Tai Chi and is sometimes cross-listed with it, Zhan Zhuang refers specifically to the held, still standing postures rather than to any choreographed sequence.

Mountain Pose is a brief standing alignment position inside a yoga sequence, usually held for a few breaths. Zhan Zhuang holds a softened-knee standing posture for many minutes as a meditative practice in its own right, not a transition between poses.

Standing qigong is being studied for easing anxiety in adults new to the practice, where researchers tested whether the long holds could lower anxiety scores in 144 qigong-naive adults (Lyu et al., 2021), and wider qigong research improved leg strength and trunk flexibility in 36 sedentary women with type 2 diabetes (Klarod et al., 2023). Direct trials of Zhan Zhuang are underway in Parkinson's disease for tremor and aerobic capacity (Zhang et al., 2022) and for posture in Pisa syndrome (Zhang et al., 2024), but these have not yet reported results. What is not yet supported: large completed trials, effect-size estimates, long-term follow-up, or any claim that it treats a diagnosed condition.
If you feel keyed-up and unable to switch off, standing qigong is now being studied as a way to settle that over-alert state, and practitioners describe the long, still holds as somewhere a racing system can finally slow down. Researchers tested whether the postures could lower scores on the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, a standard questionnaire for rating anxiety symptoms, in adults new to the practice, though this is early, indirect evidence pointing to a promising direction rather than a proven effect (Lyu et al., 2021).

The most direct Zhan Zhuang studies are trials now underway in Parkinson's disease, testing it for tremor, aerobic capacity, and posture, which have not yet reported outcomes (Zhang et al., 2022), (Zhang et al., 2024). Zhan Zhuang comes from the internal martial arts and health Qigong traditions of China, where holding still standing postures is a foundational way to root, align, and cultivate what the tradition calls qi.
