The Science and Subtle Art of Sound Meditation

With Genie J

Complimentary and Integrative Healthcare continues to expand in providing evidence-based options to the informed patient. Current Healthcare models offer clients a whole patient-centered team, of dedicated and educated practitioners, concerned with their overall health and well-being. This course is an introduction to the Science and Subtle Art of Sound Meditation for Integrative Healthcare workers of all kinds and for anyone with more than a casual interest in sound meditation. By the end of this 9-class series, you’ll have a strong grasp on the fundamentals of sound science including the chemistry and physics of sound, the inner workings of how sound impacts the body physically, and the psychological mechanisms involved in how the brain reacts to sound. And you’ll have a strong sense of how to set up and provide a meaningful sound meditation experience. I’m your facilitator, Genie J., and in addition to being one of many dedicated Insight Timer teachers and workshop presenters, I’m also a science-based Mindfulness Facilitator who has specialized in sound meditations since 2009. For me, learning to work with sound, was like remembering something that on some deep level, I already knew. In its familiarity, it effectively bypasses mental roadblocks and works directly with physiology. In this course, I’ll share what I’ve learned as a facilitator and as a student of integrative health in one of the US’s most prestigious Integrative Health programs. This combination of experience and cutting-edge science culminates into an impactful and distinctive facilitation style that informs the next generation of sound healing professionals. Additionally, it can help you take your personal or professional practice to the next level. Each class opens with 3 breaths to shift our minds into the present moment and closes with a contemplative sound meditation to provide space for reflection. And lastly, we’ll also touch on how the ancient Ayurvedic practice of Yoga Nidra stimulates different areas of the brain, and the final class will be an example of how to incorporate sound healing with Yoga Nidra. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to confidently facilitate a meaningful sound meditation experience. And this introduction is only the beginning of the expansive healing modality and well-being practice of Sound Healing Meditations. Day 1 - What is Sound? Day 2 - Wave Mechanics - Interference, Entrainment, & Resonance Day 3 - Cells & Cellular Memory Day 4 - Your Brain on Sound and The Expanse Day 5 - States of Consciousness Day 6 - Yoga Nidra and the Brain Day 7 - The Art of Listening Day 8 - On Facilitating Sound Sessions Day 9 - Yoga Nidra plus Sound Healing Sample

Meet your Teacher

Genie J. is The Sound Masseuse, a science-based, Mindfulness Facilitator specializing in the sound experience. She began formal studies in Sound Healing in 2009, in order to gain a more mechanical understanding of sound as a healing modality, when audience members at her A Cappella Poetry performances were regularly experiencing spontaneous emotional release and healing. She builds upon training as a certified Sound Healer, additional training as a Spiritual Coach and affirmative Prayer Practitioner, and an Associate in Arts specializing in the Humanities, Physics of Sound and Music, and Biology. Most recently her formal studies have focused on Integrative Health in ASU's online program. All contribute to her ability to connect with individuals on a deep level, beyond the science, through to the heart of the experience. Her work has taken her into hospital oncology units, physicians’ clinics and medical coops, universities, as well as hospices, and working with regular private clientele. Currently, she enjoys writing Sound Meditations and classes to help prepare the next generation of Sound Medicine professionals.

Lesson 2

Wave Mechanics - Interference, Entrainment, & Resonance

In this class we explore some of the physics of sound and sound waves, touch on Cymatics images, present interesting perspectives on the differences between resonance and entrainment while also lightly touching on modern medical applications that utilize this sound science. And more...

Lesson 3

Cells & Cellular Memory

In this class, we'll consider the smallest living units in the body - our cells, theories of cellular memory, and the implications of how the intentional use of sound waves might impact the water within the cells of the body. All through the lens of beginning to consider some of what clients might be experiencing during a sound session.

Lesson 5

States Of Consciousness

One of the fundamental goals of meditation practice is to experience expanded states of awareness. This class takes a look at the different states of consciousness as based on brain wave averages of the EEG, with consideration to how we might use sound meditation to help intentionally move between these states of consciousness for healing, well-being, and Flow state awareness.

Lesson 9

Yoga Nidra Plus Sound Healing Sample

This practice session models techniques that might be used to incorporate sounding healing with the ancient, Ayurvedic practice of Yoga Nidra to further enhance the experience of shifting states of consciousness. The Awakening Bells, instruments tuned to stimulate the part of the brain that helps to control stress, and approximates the relaxed Theta state of consciousness, are used as training bells between the 8 sections of the practice to help the student further discern the stages, and consider techniques they might use for each stage.
