When was the last time you watched the sun rise? In today’s 5 Minutes in Nature, Liz shares a recent early morning spent watching the sun emerge over the horizon — a quiet, powerful moment that left her feeling both humbled and uplifted. In light of the current state of the world, the experience felt especially meaningful — a reminder of beauty, hope, and renewal amidst uncertainty.

Hello and welcome to five minutes in nature with me Liz Scott and it's another grey July day but I don't mind as you know I quite like it when it's cooler and when I get outside on my walks and once again you find me up on the moorland of Dartmoor I'm very lucky to live close to the moorland I live on the southern slopes and it's such a gorgeous way of getting out and breathing in deeply when I see this wide expanse of land in front of me and today is I'm gonna actually I don't usually do this but I recommend you do something and please you don't have to do it of course but what I did the other day and we're in midsummer so obviously the days are very long but I wanted to see the sunrise I'm very used to getting out quite early in the morning and in the winter time I I see the the sunrise every single day because I'm out early enough and it rises quite late you know it rises after 8 o'clock in the morning so it's no hardship to get up and see the sunrise in the winter but in the summertime where we are in order to see the sunrise well that means getting up four o'clock in the morning and then walking up a hill which is what we did I say we myself and my husband to then sit on top of one of the hillsides we call it the beacon above our house and just to watch the Sun rise it was on one of those occasions where the news in the world was really quite bleak and challenging and I find it quite upsetting to witness the news and some of the hardships that other people are experiencing and going through and you know as I sat on top of the beacon there's a rock on top of the beacon and my husband I sat there and the Sun rose just after 5 o'clock in the morning we had a cup of tea and we were just waiting for the Sun to rise weren't sure if we were going to see it because it was a little bit cloudy but we did see the Sun rise and it was this beautiful red glow in the sky and as it rose there was something about feeling the connection to the whole of the world knowing that it had already risen in the East that the places that I was reflecting on in the in the Middle East and and the places that have had some real extraordinary challenges over the past years and months realizing that they were seeing the same Sun and there was this thread physical thread that was connecting us all and I also found it really humbling really humbling to notice that this Sun which is billions of years old rises every day and I feel like a very insignificant speck on this planet Earth and I'm not going to be here for that long because none of us are in comparison to the ancientness of the Sun so I would really recommend it actually going and seeing the Sun rise my sense is I'd love to go and see this again when we get towards the equinox and in midwinter it's quite easy like I say to see the Sun rising because it rises so much later in the morning but go and see the Sun rise and realize that this Sun shines on everyone and there's something quite unifying and humbling about seeing it rise and knowing that we are connected not just to everyone alive in the world now but to everyone who has lived and to those that will live in the future
