In today’s 5 Minutes in Nature, Liz stands in a rainy city centre, reflecting on the quiet, everyday gestures that truly make a difference. She sees the world as a stormy sea right now, with humanity in a boat being tossed by the waves. Each small act of love becomes like ballast in that boat — steadying us, helping us stay upright, and keeping us moving forward together.

Hello and welcome to 5 minutes in nature with me Liz Scott and I'm standing in the Cathedral Green in Exeter and the Cathedral Green is a patch of grass around this very impressive yellowy stoned huge church.

It's a cathedral,

It's beautiful inside,

It's spacious,

It's got stained glass windows and this is hundreds of years old so I feel like I'm really standing in a place of history and I'm quite relieved to see that the grass here in the Cathedral Green which has been just it was decimated really over the Christmas period because there's a Christmas market here and what happens is people walk over the grass or the grass is covered over with walkways and when all the Christmas stools get taken away it looks bare-earthed and tatty but I can see I think turf has been put down and there are little ropeways keeping people off the grass so it looks lush and green again it looks it looks as though it's back to where it once was and this for me is a sense of reflecting on love and small actions of love and I just need to say if you can hear the pitter-patter that's because I've got my umbrella up and there is a little bit of rain about today and returning this cathedral back to a cathedral green rather than a cathedral brown earth is an act of love and as I was walking here today and it was raining I saw an older lady she must have been a grandmother I think pushing a pushchair or a pram and she had two dogs beside her one was a whippet dog so had a coat on it to keep it warm and she was walking it was quite early in the morning and I just looked and I thought wow that would have taken a lot of effort to get all of the dogs and that little one ready to come out for a walk and it's raining that is an act of love for sure and this morning as I was walking in I I messaged my friend I'd forgotten to let her know I was coming into the city centre for a cup of coffee and and I said just in case you're free can you come in and that was an act of love I have no expectation that she'll come it's far too short notice but I just wanted her to know I'm thinking of her and it was a message of love and I guess for me as I look after my mum this weekend that's why I'm up in Exeter I help look after my elderly mum and I make her food and I'll do some chores and cleaning and just kind of be around her I'll take her out for a cup of coffee these are acts of love and my reflection today is do not underestimate little acts of love like this they are what the world needs it's like they are the ballast of the boat that's at the moment on very stormy seas it seems in the world news that we're experiencing little acts of love small acts of love are exactly what the world needs so I am going to head off and find a coffee shop and have a very welcome cup of coffee and you can probably hear the Cathedral behind me is striking 8 o'clock and I'm hoping to meet my brother for a coffee at 8 o'clock so I better I better get a move on but today is just a reflection on acts of love simple acts of love do not underestimate them and I'll be back again tomorrow with another five minutes in nature
