Hello and welcome to five minutes in nature with me Liz Scott out on Dartmoor.
Dartmoor is quite an elevated moorland and for my viewpoint at the moment where I'm standing I can see below me in the fields it's the evening at the moment and I can see me the fields the arable green and yellow fields stretching out below and in Devon the fields are not that big and they're separated by dark green hedgerows or dark green rows of trees and so they make a wonderful sort of almost like a chessboard effect and they're illuminated at the moment in the evening sunshine and I find it just so refreshing to allow my gaze to stretch out across this landscape and from this vantage point I can see for miles and miles.
And yesterday we were touching on this idea of me not telling you how to get rid of thoughts and feelings and not trying to change them,
Not using tools or techniques.
And if you haven't listened to yesterday,
Please do just go back and listen to it because it kind of informs what I want to talk about today.
Yesterday was an exploration into not trying to change thoughts or feelings,
Not trying to get rid of uncomfortable feelings.
In my experience,
There is no point trying to do that.
There's no point trying to feel better.
When I bring my awareness back to the truth and essence of who I am,
That place of peace,
Love,
Wisdom,
When I come back and experience that within me.
Then what I find is my thoughts seem to naturally dissolve and disappear.
It's not anything I'm doing.
I'm not doing that to get rid of thoughts and feelings.
It just makes sense.
It feels more true and I feel more grounded when I bring my awareness back to the truth of who I am.
And today is taking this on a step further because I was listening to a teacher and one of the things he said is something that deeply inspired me and I want to share it with you.
Somebody asked him,
Basically,
What is the purpose of life?
What is my purpose in life?
And he said,
Well,
You have a twofold purpose.
First of all,
It's to get in touch with who you truly are,
To become aware of presence,
Of that space within you.
That is the first purpose.
It's like your whole mission,
Purpose in life.
Is to bring your awareness back to that space within you so you can have an experience of who you truly are.
Like a direct experience of who you truly are.
He said,
That is your purpose.
And then he said,
And the second part of your purpose is that from that place,
That space,
That experience of who you truly are,
I see it as an expansive,
Ever-present sense of awareness,
Of compassion,
Of love,
It's a language I can't even,
Even trying to articulate it,
I think,
No,
That's not the right word.
But it's an awareness of who I truly am.
Some people call it bringing my awareness back to the I am,
The I am-ness,
That which is before thought arises.
So when I bring my awareness back to that,
Which is the first part of my purpose,
The second part is then to live from that place.
And that was the bit that really struck me when I heard him say it,
Is to live,
As I heard him say it,
Live with freedom from a place of love.
What would that be like?
What would it be like in my life?
If all my purpose was,
Was to bring my awareness back to who I truly am,
And then to live my life as an expression of that.
Do things that I love in the world.
For me I know that naturally what will happen is I will come out in nature,
I will enjoy growing a garden,
I will be present with people,
I will share and give generously of my time and listen to people and I'm not doing it from a place of I should.
This is a natural response,
A natural occurrence when I get back in touch with who I truly am.
And I felt this real flutter of excitement and truth as I began to contemplate this for myself,
Of living my life,
Living a life I love,
And being in love with the life I live.
Not because I'm trying to,
But because it is a natural expression of who I truly am.
So I'd love to know your reflections on this,
That two steps.
First of all,
Get back in touch with who you truly are.
And then just live from that place and live with love.
I'd love to know your reflections on this.
And of course,
Don't forget to join me again tomorrow for another five minutes in nature.
