Introduction To Yoga Nidra
by linda kantor
This video offers a short introduction to the restorative practice of Yoga Nidra, otherwise known as non-sleep deep rest. It is a guided practice that invites deep rest while remaining gently awake and aware. Unlike meditation, where we often focus attention on a particular object, Yoga Nidra encourages us to rest and receive, allowing the body, mind, and nervous system to settle naturally.

Hi,
Everybody.
Today I'd like to introduce you to a practice called Yoga Nidra.
Yoga Nidra is often translated as yogic sleep,
But it isn't actually about sleeping.
Instead,
It's a guided meditation practice that invites us into a state of deep rest while remaining gently aware.
So many of us spend our days in doing,
Thinking,
Planning,
Rehashing,
Reacting,
And even when we stop,
Our minds can keep racing.
And Yoga Nidra offers us an opportunity to step out of that cycle and enter a state of profound rest and renewal.
So in a typical yoga nidra,
You lie down or sit down comfortably while you are guided through different stages of awareness.
You might be invited to notice your breath,
Or to sense different parts of your body,
Or connect with emotions,
Or simply to rest in awareness itself.
And one of the beautiful things about a yoga nidra is that there's nothing you need to achieve.
You don't need to empty your mind,
You don't have to relax perfectly,
And there's no particular experience you need to have.
So some people remain alert through it,
Some people drift in and out of sleep,
And all of that is perfect.
The research suggests that deep rest practices support our well-being,
Reduce our stress and help us regulate our nervous systems.
And so Yoga Nidra is particularly useful in times of overwhelm or change.
And if you're new to meditation,
Yoga Nidra can be a wonderful place to begin and to allow yourself just to lie down,
To listen and to be guided.
Thank you.
