Hello and welcome to the Calmcast,
A time to feel calm and think clearly.
I'm Claire Downham,
The Queen of Calm,
A Transformational Life Coach.
I was a burnt out head teacher who finally made the journey to calm after years of trying,
And I want to prevent you from having to do the same.
The Calmcast is a series of short explorations gently guiding you back to your natural state,
Which is calm and clarity.
Just listen like you would listen to music,
With an open mind and curiosity.
There's nothing else to do.
Now let's relax into today's episode.
So today,
Embracing the unknown.
And if you're watching this rather than listening to it,
You'll be able to see that there is a very annoying,
It's not the fly,
Clearly it's my thinking about the fly.
There's a fly buzzing around my head.
So you may hear that intermittently,
Or you may be able to see it as if it's under me,
Wafting my hand about to try and keep it out of my way.
It is a very hot day again,
So the flies are obviously very happy buzzing around.
There it goes.
So today,
Of course,
We're exploring embracing the unknown from a three principles perspective.
I'm trying to mention the three principles now in each session that I do,
Because as I do keep saying,
If you love listening to me talking about the three principles,
That's wonderful.
Keep listening to me,
Listen to my other content and access my little courses on Insight Timer and talk to me if you want to.
But whatever you do,
Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the three principles.
And the real essence of the three principles is that our potential is so much more than we ever see it.
And this month I have been exploring,
I feel like I could explore this for the next 12 months to be fair,
Because it's everything.
It's everything where we are not revealing our potential,
Or accessing our potential,
Or being everything that we want to be in life.
Feeling like we're a bit lost maybe.
And I've really been exploring this equation of performance equaling potential minus interference.
And really what I talk about in this recording is in terms of the implications of the three principles is,
What interference is there in us accessing our true potential?
What's in the way?
So today,
Embracing the unknown is a great topic around how that,
How the concept,
We're going to talk about the concepts of the unknown,
How that can get in the way of us experiencing the wonderfulness,
Probably a made up word,
The wonderfulness of who we actually are,
Who we truly are.
So let's talk first of all about the unknown and why,
How we can embrace it,
Because it's sold to us,
Isn't it,
As a quite a scary concept,
The unknown.
It's the unknown.
You know,
We talk about fear of the unknown.
We talk about anxiety coming from the unknown.
We really do.
The unknown has got a bad rap.
I feel like it needs some PR attention because it seems to be getting a bad rap,
Doesn't it?
But that's because there's a misunderstanding there and there's some interference.
So the unknown is the not known.
It's the stuff we don't know.
So how can that induce fear?
That's like saying,
I don't know right now what time is.
Now I can sit here and make up what time is.
I do know what time is because I can see on the computer but there's no fear there,
Is there?
There's no fear in not knowing.
Now let's take another thing.
Let's take like what's for tea tonight.
Tea for those that are not listening in the UK is our evening meal,
Not just a cup of tea.
So what's for tea?
Like if that's unknown,
Then it's just an open space,
Isn't it,
For me to decide what I might fancy eating or it's an open space for Bruce to decide what we will be eating.
Well,
He always consults me but he's very good at kind of creating food.
He's an ex-chef so I'm blessed.
I'm blessed in many ways for having Bruce in my life but that is one of the ways I am blessed is that he is fab at rustling up meals.
Like,
Well,
Ever I'm just okay with not knowing what's it,
Which I am.
I'm such an easygoing person with food really.
I'm very,
Very open I'm such an easygoing person with food really.
I very rarely,
You know,
Sometimes if it's like it's really hot today so I'll probably want something quite light for our evening meal tonight but not knowing what I'm going to eat tonight.
It's like I'm just like,
Oh yeah,
Okay,
I don't know what I'm going to eat tonight.
It's fine.
My stomach's starting to rumble today for some reason this early on in the day.
So I know it's early,
Like I don't really eat breakfast so I might be contemplating what I'm going to have for lunch but I don't know.
I don't know and it's okay not to know,
Isn't it?
There's loads of things in our life that we don't really care whether we know them or not.
You know,
I've had two children and on both occasions I didn't want to know the gender.
I was told that if you don't know you push harder and you have an easier birth but I didn't want to know anyway.
I wanted it to be a surprise.
I was told that if I didn't know,
Lots of people do want to know but there was no fear there.
It was something I didn't know.
I didn't know whether the baby growing inside me was a boy or a girl.
As it turned out,
One was a girl and the second one was a boy.
Both times I didn't really have anything on it and so there's loads of things we don't know and they don't bother us.
So what is fear of the unknown?
Fear of the unknown is not knowing and it bothering us but mostly not because we don't know but because we make up something.
So for example,
If I really,
Really,
Really wanted a boy first for whatever reason and then I didn't know what I was having,
Maybe it was one of those times in history when you couldn't know what you were going to have.
Like when I was born,
You didn't get to know what gender your child was in advance and I really,
Really wanted a boy then,
You know,
If I thought I'm going to have a girl then I could really get myself wound up about that.
Like there's not fear of the unknown,
There's fear of the made-up illusion of what we think is coming.
So it's fear of the future which doesn't exist.
It's fear of what we make up that goes into the future.
There isn't anything there and as I said in so many parts of our life we can leave it in the space of unknown,
Can't we?
We can just go,
I don't know that,
That's fine,
It's okay not to know.
But we're always applying this concept of the fear of the unknown to the future,
Aren't we?
We're looking at it and we're saying we're not looking at the unknown,
We're putting things,
If you imagine the unknown is a space,
We're putting things into that space,
Scary things usually,
And in the middle of all that we're putting a slightly inept version of us that can't cope with the things that we've put into the space that we call the unknown.
Like we're really,
We can we can really do that,
Can't we?
Fill that space of the unknown with scary things and slightly scared version of us and somebody who can't cope with all of the things that we've made up.
So the,
You know,
The same goes for uncertainty.
That is also,
Isn't it,
That is also a thing that we talk about,
Unknown,
Uncertainty.
All of those,
Both of those things are just,
Well nothing is certain anyway,
But we're not,
We're not afraid of uncertainty,
We're afraid of what we are making up in in that space,
Unknown,
Uncertainty,
Whatever you want to call it,
It's all the same thing really.
And if we reference back to that,
If we're thinking again about achieving our potential,
Being,
You know,
Doing what we want to do,
Being what we want to do,
Following from our heart,
You know,
Following our passions and those kind of things,
This,
You know,
Our potential is interfered with by these ideas that we have,
These things we make up,
The unknown,
The uncertain,
The things we put into that space.
So it's interference and really I'm seeing more and more that in this conversation,
In the way in which I help people,
It is for them to become aware,
It's for you to become aware of what interference is running in your system.
What,
What interference is there?
What's in the way?
What's blocking that?
It's thought,
It's always thought,
It brings with it some uncomfortable feelings often,
But it's always thought that's blocking our potential,
It's blocking our performance,
It's getting in the way.
And,
And that's why,
That's like,
I mean the title of this embracing the unknown,
Like this,
There's nothing to embrace,
But there's something to see around what we are creating,
What noise,
What interference we are creating that's going into that space of the future.
Maybe it's embracing the future,
Although there's nothing there also.
Although there's nothing there also,
There's nothing there.
Now what to me happens in terms of achieving our potential,
You know,
Doing,
Doing the best for ourselves really,
How embracing the unknown as,
As a,
As an understanding of,
Of the fact that there is no such thing and there's,
And therefore that we can start to look at that interference,
Look at that noise in a different way,
Is that when we start to do that,
There's,
There's a space that opens up.
If we start to notice that we have some thoughts about the future,
We become aware of those and we can see that they are,
They're perhaps not helpful to us.
What we can then do is we can start to let those go,
Not,
Not in a,
You must let these thoughts go kind of way,
But it just becomes natural to do that when we start to see that they're getting in the way,
The thoughts that are getting in the way,
That's it,
That's the interference.
And,
And as we begin to do that,
Bearing in mind the only thing ever in the way of your potential being revealed is the interference from your noisy mind,
Then what gets revealed then is amazing.
This is,
You know,
Is seeing the interference that allows the potential to be,
To emerge really.
And I don't think we can ever fully,
Fully get there wherever there is,
There's nowhere to get to really,
It's all there inside,
But I didn't think we can ever fully experience that,
But we can get really close as we start to allow that,
That thinking to pass.
As we begin to let it go,
Our potential is under the noise,
It's under the interference.
So I hope you found that helpful,
Embracing the unknown has become a,
A thing that really,
You know,
I'm inviting you to do it,
But without doing it,
If you know what I mean,
Because it doesn't really exist,
There's nothing there,
There's nothing for you to be afraid of.
Take care,
Lots of love,
Thank you.
Thank you so much for listening.
There's nothing to do now,
But bring someone to you.
Listen regularly to experience longer and longer periods of calm.
This has been the Calmcast with Claire Downum,
