That's not you.
That's just a thought.
Have you noticed how identified you can be with your thinking?
In fact,
Do you even know that it's thinking?
Do you think that voice is you?
I often call that voice,
Particularly the one that's downright mean to you,
The inner critic.
Did you know that the inner critic is just a habit of thought?
It might feel like it's been there your whole life,
And that's what many of my clients say to me,
But that thought,
It's been there my whole life.
I don't remember a time when it wasn't there,
But it's just a habit.
I was just thinking just then,
It's just a habit like picking your nose.
Maybe you've always picked your nose since when you were a little child.
Maybe you haven't.
That just came to mind amusingly.
That inner critical voice is not you.
It's just a thought.
It's not your identity.
It's not who you really are.
It's just a thought that you've been hearing and believing,
Perhaps for a very,
Very long time.
In my case,
For decades.
For decades,
The inner critic is just a pattern.
It's not a prophecy.
It's not the truth.
It's not who you really are.
Can you begin to just take a microscopic step backwards to see that,
To see that that critical voice is not you?
Can you hear a thought without believing it?
What would that be like to just hear a thought without believing it?
Can you pause and say,
That's not me.
That's just a thought and notice what happens.
And the last thing I want you to know is that all the time you're believing these awful thoughts about yourself,
These habits of thought,
These critical thoughts.
Have you noticed how that feels in your body?
That's a magical clue.
That's your clever,
Clever body just telling you,
That's not true.
Every thought you believe that isn't true feels really ropey in your body.
Isn't that magical to know?
That can so help us to take a different view of those thoughts.
So,
That's not you.
It's just a thought.
Try carrying that with you today.
