How To Be Lonely

With Chris Flack

What you’ll get from this course: This course offers a practical, compassionate roadmap for navigating loneliness — not as a weakness, but as a source of wisdom and strength. You’ll learn how to: Understand the biology and psychology of loneliness Break the “loneliness loop” Identify and nurture the three core types of connection we all need Navigate digital technology as both a bridge and a barrier Reconnect with others and with yourself using heart-based practices Whether you’re feeling isolated, stuck, or simply want to better support your own or others’ social wellbeing, this course is a guide to reconnecting — gently, honestly, and and in a way that lasts. Who it’s for: This course is open to everyone — no prior experience required. It may be especially helpful for those who: Feel isolated, disconnected, or “stuck” in social avoidance Are going through a major life change, illness, or loss Live with chronic conditions that limit connection or energy Work in wellness, education, or leadership and want tools to better understand loneliness Support others who are lonely (e.g. carers, community leaders, HR professionals) Why I created this course: Loneliness is something we all experience — not just during major life transitions, but in everyday moments too. Sometimes it’s acute. Sometimes it’s just a quiet ache. But beneath it all, loneliness is a signal — one that calls us back to connection, which is a biological imperative. Drawing on my decade of research into loneliness and digital wellbeing, I combine insights from neuroscience and psychology with guided meditation practices grounded in heart coherence and self-compassion. I hold an MSc in Organisational Psychology and have spoken on social and digital wellbeing at over 100 organisations including the United Nations and University of Cambridge. I’ve also been a yoga and meditation teacher since 2012. This course is also deeply personal. In 2022, I developed a serious chronic neurological condition that radically changed how I connect with others, and with myself. I’ve spent long stretches of time housebound, and much of this course was created in 15-minute increments while managing fatigue and pain. What I share here comes not just from theory, but from lived experience. From the inside out. As neuroscientist Dr. Dan Lieberman says, human connection, when understood, can be a superpower. But if ignored, it becomes our kryptonite. This course helps you harness that power with awareness, insight, and kindness. Prerequisites: No prior experience with meditation is required, though having a basic practice may help. If you’re new, you’ll be gently guided through each practice step by step.

Meet your Teacher

Chris Flack is a meditation teacher, behaviour change consultant, and LinkedIn Learning instructor with a passion for wellbeing — both digital and deeply human. He co-founded UnPlug, a behaviour change consultancy helping people navigate life in an age of distraction, and has spoken at global organisations including Cambridge University and the United Nations. Chris holds an MSc in Organisational Psychology, where his thesis focused on digital and social wellbeing — particularly loneliness, which he’s been researching and teaching about for over a decade. His work integrates insights from neuroscience, psychology, and contemplative practice, with certifications across MBSR, MSC, TM, Vipassana, and the Polyvagal Institute’s Playzone program. In 2022, Chris’s life was profoundly changed by a chronic neurological disease, which left him spending long periods bed-bound and using a wheelchair. This shift gave him a new lens on loneliness — not just as a social issue, but as a lived, physical experience shaped by energy, mobility, and visibility. His teaching now draws deeply from this perspective, blending science, self-compassion, and heart-based practices that help us reconnect.

Lesson 1

The Body’s Signal — Loneliness As A Natural Warning System

Loneliness isn’t a flaw — it’s a biological signal, much like hunger or thirst, calling us back to connection. In this first session, we explore the science behind loneliness, introduce the three magnets of connection, and begin to reframe it with curiosity and compassion.

Lesson 2

The Loneliness Loop — And Why Awareness Matters

When loneliness goes unacknowledged, it can spiral into a self-reinforcing loop of shame and withdrawal. This session helps you recognise that loop — and shows how even small moments of awareness can gently shift you out of it.

Lesson 3

The Three Kinds Of Connection — And the Art Of Balancing Them

We explore the three types of connection we all need — with ourselves, with others, and with community — and how imbalance can quietly fuel loneliness. This session offers insight into how you can strengthen whichever “magnet” feels weakest, even when life limits your options.

Lesson 4

Digital Wellbeing — Reclaiming Our Attention, Rebuilding Our Connection

Technology can be both a bridge and a barrier to meaningful connection. Here, we explore how screen time affects our nervous system, how to make mindful tech choices, and how to use digital tools to support — rather than replace — real human contact.

Lesson 5

How To Be With Yourself — Self-Compassion As A Foundation

At the heart of connection is our relationship with ourselves. This session introduces Polyvagal Theory and heart-based practices to help you feel safe, soothed, and more at home in your own body — especially when you’re alone.

Lesson 6

Reaching Back Out — Repairing The Threads Of Belonging

Thank you, Chris for this beautiful course and for sharing your own story. I especially liked your visualization practices- the breathing into our hearts, placing our hands over our hearts and picturing a particular person. I will come back to this course again. Best wishes to you. ❤️

Fantastic. Thank you Chris. This is amazing work. The optimism in your voice shines through. It emanates from a soul who must, for a time, reside in the dark forest created when our body betrays us. Though you currently dwell in one of the worst breeding grounds for loneliness, there is not a hint of self pity or despair. There is elegance in how you have provided a way to cradle those emotions for a bit. Then ever reminding us not to shame ourselves into a worse state, but to always return to our hearts where we can always find tenderness and love for ourselves and others. We just need to put our hands there, breathe, and trust it to be so. Thank you for sharing your story and heart.

This was such a great course on essentially normalizing loneliness as a signal and not a personal failing. Thank you so much for the rich information and the incredible support!

Really enjoyed this course - it had the right balance of relatable research & concepts along with personal stories from Chris which made the spectrum of feelings of loneliness feel more real. The meditations at the end of each session were a great nudge too. Would recommend for anyone either experiencing loneliness or who just generally wants to be more comfortable sitting with themselves.

I found this course really beneficial. It's highlighted where I need to focus in terms of connection and I came to realise that I need to connect alot more with myself & go inwards than I had previously thought! It also reminded me of the benefits of generosity within friendships and how little things can really make a impact. During this course, I reached out to a friend and rejoined my yoga community. I found the pace of the meditations very relaxing and calming. Thanks, Chris!
