The Body That Knows How To Sleep

With Zuzana Robertson, AFBPsS, MSc, CSci

Your body already knows how to sleep. It has been doing it every night of your life. But somewhere along the way, something got in the way. The mind learned to interfere. The nervous system learned to stay alert even when the body was exhausted. Sleep became something you tried to do rather than something you simply allowed. This course does not teach you how to sleep. It removes what is stopping you. Each session guides you through a different body-based practice. Not thinking about sleep. Not trying to sleep. Simply allowing your body to do what it already knows how to do when the conditions are right. Progressive softening from feet to crown. Breath that signals safety directly to the nervous system. The specific quality of release that the body moves into when it finally receives permission. A safe and beautiful inner world where sleep arrives naturally without effort or instruction. Eleven sessions. Eleven different pathways into the same deep rest. No technique required. No effort. Simply press play, close your eyes, and let your body remember. Please note: As this practice is designed for deep rest and sleep, please do not listen while driving or operating heavy machinery.

Zuzana Robertson is a psychologist, hypnotherapist, and insomnia expert with almost twenty years of experience specialising in insomnia, sleep anxiety, and nervous system regulation. She works at the intersection of psychology, somatic therapy, and the neuroscience of sleep. Her approach is evidence-based and body-led. The Body That Knows How To Sleep is built entirely on that principle.

Lesson 1

The Softening

Your body already knows how to soften. It does it in the moments before deep sleep every single night. Tonight we simply invite that softening to begin a little sooner. A little more deliberately. With a little more permission.

Lesson 2

The Breath That Says Sleep

Your nervous system reads the length of your exhale as information about whether you are safe. A long slow exhale says one thing above all others. You are safe. You can rest now. Tonight every breath becomes a signal.

Lesson 3

The Heavy Blanket

Tonight the body discovers a different quality of heaviness. Not the heaviness of exhaustion. The heaviness of complete safety. The specific physical sensation of being held. Of being completely supported. Of having nowhere else to go and nothing else to do.

Lesson 4

The Safe Place

Every person has a place, real or imagined, where they feel completely safe. Tonight we find yours. And we stay there. In your own safe world. Where sleep arrives not as something you chase but as a natural visitor to a place where it has always been welcome.

Lesson 5

Counting Down From The Surface

Tonight a different kind of descent. Not through the body. Through the mind. Ten steps downward from the surface of the day into the deep still place where sleep lives. Each step taking you further from wakefulness and closer to the rest that has been waiting for you all day.

Lesson 6

The Hands That Hold Everything

Tonight we work with the hands. The part of the body that spends the entire day doing, holding, managing, carrying. Tonight the hands are given something they rarely receive. Complete permission to do nothing. And in the release of the hands the rest of the body follows.

Lesson 7

The Breath Of The Sleeping Body

A sleeping person breathes differently from a waking one. Tonight we simply begin breathing the way a sleeping body breathes. And the body, receiving the signal of its own sleeping breath, follows where the breath leads.

Lesson 8

The Colour Of Sleep

Tonight we use the mind’s natural tendency to respond to colour and light. A slow journey through the colours of rest. From the vivid colours of the waking day through the softer hues of relaxation into the deep indigo of genuine sleep. The mind follows the colour. And the body follows the mind.

Lesson 9

The Letting Go Of Today

The sleeping mind cannot simultaneously hold the day and let it go. Tonight a simple deliberate practice of setting the day down. Not resolving it. Not processing it. Simply placing it somewhere safe until morning. And arriving in the night with nothing left to carry.

Lesson 10

The River of Sleep

Tonight a journey. Down a slow dark river that flows only one direction. Toward rest. Toward deep quiet. Toward the place where sleep lives. The body becomes a boat. The breath becomes the current. And the mind simply watches the banks drift past.

Lesson 11

The Final Permission

The last session in the course. And the most important thing it can give you. Not another technique. Simply the deepest and most complete permission to rest that you have ever given yourself. Because in the end that is all sleep has ever been waiting for.
