The Polyvagal Journey - Sound & Science To Unwind Stress & Anxiety

With Zuzana Robertson, Psychologist

Your nervous system is not broken. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Every state you have ever been in. The anxiety that won’t switch off. The exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix. The disconnection that has settled in so quietly you have stopped noticing it. Every single one of these is your nervous system responding intelligently to what it has experienced. The problem is not the response. The problem is getting stuck there. In 1994, a neuroscientist named Stephen Porges published a theory that changed everything we thought we knew about the human nervous system. He called it polyvagal theory. And what it revealed was extraordinary. We do not have one stress response. We have three distinct neurological states. Each with its own physiology. Its own psychology. Its own felt sense in the body. And its own pathway back to regulation. Understanding these three states is the most useful thing you can learn about your own nervous system. Because once you can name where you are, you can begin to find your way back. This course maps that journey. Ten days. Three states. Original music composed specifically for each neurological territory. Evidence-based teaching drawn from the most important research in nervous system science. And guided practices designed to produce a direct, felt, embodied experience of each state. Not just an intellectual understanding of it. This is not a course about managing stress. It is a course about understanding your own nervous system so completely that stress loses its power to define your experience. Created by a practitioner with eighteen years of experience working with the nervous system, mind-body approaches to regulation, and the evidence base for sound as a direct regulatory tool. Ten days. The most important map you will ever learn to read.

Meet your Teacher

Zuzana Robertson is a psychologist and certified CBT hypnotherapist with eighteen years of experience working with people and organisations through stress, anxiety, burnout, and nervous system dysregulation. She holds a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy and is also a meditation teacher, audiovisual artist, and composer. Polyvagal theory and its practical application to nervous system regulation are among her specialist areas. She brings together Stephen Porges’ foundational research, somatic psychology, and her work as a composer of original psychoacoustic music into a single, complete ten day journey through the nervous system’s own landscape. The Polyvagal Journey is one of the most scientifically grounded course in her catalogue. And the most immediately practical. Because understanding your own nervous system changes everything.

Lesson 1

The Three States - Meeting Your Nervous System For The First Time

Before we can navigate the nervous system we need to understand its architecture. Today introduces polyvagal theory, one of the most important scientific discoveries of the last thirty years, and the three distinct neurological states that govern every human experience. This is the foundation everything else is built on.

Lesson 2

The Shutdown State - Understanding Dorsal Vagal

The shutdown state is the most misunderstood of the three nervous system states. It is frequently mistaken for depression, laziness, or emotional unavailability. Today, we explore the dorsal vagal state in depth. It's biology. Its purpose. It's a felt sense in the body. And the first steps toward moving through it rather than being defined by it.

Lesson 3

The Mobilisation State - Understanding Sympathetic Activation

The sympathetic state is the most familiar of the three nervous system states for most people in modern life. It is the engine of fight or flight, of productivity and performance, of anxiety and overwhelm. Today, we explore its biology, its purpose, its costs, and the crucial distinction between healthy activation and chronic dysregulation.

Lesson 4

Moving Through Freeze - From Shutdown To Thawing

Knowing about the shutdown state is one thing. Moving through it is another entirely. Today, we go deeper into the specific practices and sounds that signal safety to a frozen nervous system, drawing on somatic experiencing, titration, and the neuroscience of gentle re-engagement.

Lesson 5

Moving Through Activation - From Fight And Flight To Ground

Chronic sympathetic activation is the defining nervous system experience of modern life. Today, we work directly with the mobilised state, using somatic discharge, breath regulation, and sound to complete the stress cycle and return the nervous system to its regulated baseline.

Lesson 6

The Window Of Tolerance - Finding The Zone Where Healing Happens

The window of tolerance is the optimal zone of nervous system activation where genuine learning, healing, and growth occur. Today, we map our own window, understand why it narrows under chronic stress, and begin the practices that reliably expand it.

Lesson 7

The Safety State - Coming Home To Ventral Vagal

The ventral vagal state is the nervous system’s home. The state of genuine safety, social engagement, and open presence. Today, we explore its neuroscience in depth, understand what produces it, and begin the deliberate cultivation of it through sound and somatic practice.

Lesson 8

Sound As A Medicine - How The Ear Regulates The Nervous System

Today, we go deep into the neuroscience of why sound is so powerful for nervous system regulation. The vagus nerve. The middle ear muscles. And why the music in this course is not just pleasant but physiologically precise.

Lesson 9

Nature, Connection And Co-regulation - The Three Most Reliable Safety Signals

The ventral vagal system has three primary inputs that reliably produce safety. Nature. Connection with other regulated nervous systems. And prosodic sound. Today, we explore all three, understand the neuroscience behind each, and build a personal safety toolkit that is always available.

Lesson 10

The Integrated Nervous System - Living The Map

The final day brings everything together. Not as an ending but as a beginning. Today, we integrate the map, build a personal regulation practice that is genuinely sustainable, and step forward as someone who understands their own nervous system completely enough to work with it rather than against it.
