4.
When everything feels a bit too much.
Before we begin,
Please be gentle with yourself during this practice.
If deep breathing feels uncomfortable,
Emotional or overwhelming for you today,
You're welcome to soften the breath,
Pause at any time or simply just listen and rest.
There is no right way to do this and you can't get it wrong.
Take a moment now to settle into a comfortable position.
Perhaps lying down,
Perhaps sitting with support beneath you.
Once settled,
Before trying to change anything,
Just notice how you feel.
Maybe there's too much noise,
Too many decisions,
Too many emotions,
Too much pressure.
Maybe your nervous system feels tired and if that's true for you today,
You are not failing.
You are human and you're not alone.
Begin a slow breath in through the nose and gently sigh it out.
Again,
Slow inhale,
Soft exhale.
Now begin to notice the movement of your breath,
The natural movement,
So no forcing or controlling.
Simply notice where the breath moves in the body.
We'll now begin a gentle three-part breath.
As you inhale,
First allow the breath to expand softly in the abdomen and then into the ribs and then gently into the chest.
As you exhale,
Slowly soften the chest,
The ribs and the abdomen.
Nothing dramatic here,
Just gentle waves of breath moving through the body.
Again,
Breathing into the abdomen,
Ribs,
The chest,
And exhaling slowly,
Chest,
Ribs,
Abdomen.
Continue with this at your own comfortable pace,
Allowing the breath to become smooth and steady.
And as you breathe in this way,
Perhaps imagine you're creating a little bit more space inside yourself,
Not to fix everything and not to solve everything,
Just enough space to breathe again.
Sometimes when life feels overwhelming,
The body tightens without us even noticing.
The jaw,
The shoulders,
The stomach,
The breath itself can become smaller and shallower.
So for these next few moments,
Allow the breath to remind the body that it does not need to hold everything all at once.
Inhaling gently into the belly,
Ribs,
Chest,
And exhale slowly and completely.
Perhaps with each exhale you can let go of a little pressure,
A little tension,
A little heaviness.
Not forever,
Just for now.
You do not need to carry everything in this moment.
Notice the support beneath you.
Feel the steadiness underneath any overwhelm.
Even here,
With all that life brings,
The breath continues.
Slow,
Quiet,
And steady.
Take one final gentle breath at your own pace.
Then allow the breathing to return to normal.
No effort now,
No fixing,
Just resting for a moment exactly as you are.
And perhaps reminding yourself,
I can take things one breath,
One moment,
One step at a time.
When you're ready,
Slowly bring your awareness back to the room around you and thank yourself for pausing.
