So,
Here you are,
It's late and sleep hasn't come.
Maybe your mind is running,
Thoughts looping,
That familiar restlessness settling into the body,
The frustration of lying there,
Willing yourself to drift off,
And finding that the harder you try,
The more awake you seem to feel.
I want you to know,
First before anything else,
That this is one of the most human experiences there is.
What you're feeling right now is not a flaw,
It's not weakness,
It's not your body failing you.
It's actually your brain doing exactly what it was built to do,
Just at the wrong time.
So,
If you're lying here feeling frustrated with yourself,
Or anxious about the sleep you're losing,
Or quietly convinced that something is wrong with you,
I'd like you to gently set that down.
You don't need to fix anything tonight.
You don't need to force anything.
All you need to do is be here with me for a little while,
And let the rest take care of itself.
So,
Let me explain what's actually happening,
Because I think when we understand something,
It becomes a little less threatening.
Your brain has an alerting system,
An ancient,
Deeply wired network that exists to keep you safe,
To scan for danger,
To prepare the body for action when it's needed.
When this system activates,
It sends signals through your body.
Stress hormones,
The muscles subtly engage,
The breath becomes a little shallower,
Heart rate raises slightly,
Your whole physiology shifts into a state of readiness.
It's an extraordinary system,
And tonight,
It's just working the night shift by mistake.
The mind picked up a thread,
A worry,
A thought,
A loop of something unresolved,
And the brain responded the only way it knows how,
It prepared to deal with it.
But there's nothing to deal with,
There's only the bed,
The darkness,
The quiet,
And me being here by your side trying to support you.
Here's what I want you to understand.
You do not need to fight this system,
You do not need to silence the thoughts or wrestle the mind into stillness,
That approach almost always backfires,
Because effort is itself a signal to the brain that something is happening that needs attention.
Instead,
We're going to do something much simpler.
We're going to move attention out of the thinking mind and into the body.
Because,
Here's what I know to be true,
Your body already knows how to sleep.
It has done it thousands of times.
That knowledge is not lost,
It's just been temporarily crowded out.
And when we redirect attention away from thought and into physical sensation,
Something remarkable happens.
The brain receives a different signal,
The alerting system begins to quiet,
And the body starts to remember what it was always meant to do.
You don't have to make sleep happen,
We're simply going to get out of its way.
And as the music shifts now,
Let that be your invitation to release the thinking mind and begin to arrive in the body.
Just notice for a moment the weight of your body,
The way the mattress holds you,
The way gravity quietly does its work,
Pressing you gently downward into rest.
You don't have to do anything with that,
Just feel it.
And take one slow breath in through your nose,
And a long,
Easy breath out through your mouth.
You don't need to control the breath from here,
Just let it move.
Let the body breathe in its own rhythm,
Your only job is to notice,
Feel the rise and feel the fall.
Now,
We are going to move through the body together,
Slowly,
Gently,
Starting at the top and making our way down.
We will simply bring attention to each area,
Invite a soft engagement,
And then release.
There's no effort required,
No performance,
Just a quiet conversation between your attention and your body.
Bring your awareness to your forehead,
Just notice what's there,
Perhaps some tension,
A holding you hadn't noticed until now.
Gently,
Very gently,
Raise your eyebrows just slightly,
A soft engagement of the forehead,
And now release.
Feel the forehead soften,
The skin smoothing,
The space between your eyebrows widening slightly,
And then,
Let your attention drift down to your eyes.
The eyelids are heavy,
Let them be heavy,
There's nothing to see.
Gently,
Squeeze your eyes closed,
Just a soft squeeze,
And release.
Feel the face open,
The cheeks soften,
Let the jaw hang loose inside the mouth,
Lips barely touching,
Or perhaps slightly apart.
The jaw carries so much,
Let it go now.
Gently,
Press the teeth together,
Lightly,
And release.
Let the lower jaw drop just slightly,
Feel the space that opens,
The softening of the muscles along the side of the face.
Now,
Bring your awareness down into the neck,
The throat,
The top of your shoulders,
These are the places we carry the most without realizing.
The places tension lives quietly for hours,
For days.
Draw the shoulders up very slightly,
Just a small shrug,
And let them drop.
Feel them fall away from the ears,
Feel the neck lengthen softly.
Let your awareness travel down through the upper arms,
The elbows,
The forearms,
All the way to the hands,
The palms,
The fingers.
Make a very soft fist,
Gently,
Just a gentle closing of the hands,
And release.
Let the fingers uncurl,
Feel the warmth in the palms,
The slight tingling that comes with release.
The arms are heavy now,
Heavy and warm,
Let them rest completely in the bed.
Bring attention to the chest,
Feel it rise and fall with each breath.
Take one gentle breath in,
Feeling the chest expand,
And breathe out slowly,
Feeling the chest softening downward.
Let the upper back release into the mattress,
Feel the shoulder blades settle.
Now,
The belly,
So often held,
So often braced.
Take a slow breath into the belly,
Let it rise gently,
And on the exhale,
Let it go completely,
Soft,
Unguarded.
Feel the belly rise and fall on its own,
Without your direction.
Awareness moves into the lower back.
Feel the weight of the pelvis,
Heavy against the mattress,
Sinking.
Gently press the lower back very slightly into the bed,
And release.
Let the hips open,
Let them be held.
Awareness drifts down into the thighs.
The large muscles there,
Heavy and warm.
Gently squeeze the thighs together,
Just a soft press.
Now,
Down into the calves,
Soft,
Heavy.
Point the feet very gently,
Just slightly.
The soles of the feet,
The toes,
Letting go completely.
The whole body now,
From the crown of the head to the tips of the toes,
Resting,
Held.
The body knows,
It has always known,
There is nothing more for you to do.
Just this weight,
This warmth,
This breath,
Moving gently on its own.
The mind may still offer thoughts,
That's normal.
You don't need to follow them.
Just return to the body,
To the weight,
To the breath.
Sinking,
Softening,
Resting.
