Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.
And here up on Dartmoor,
The moorland just above my home,
I'm just out of earshot of the Ludbrook.
It's a beautiful little brook,
A stream that runs down off the moorland and heads down towards the River Urn.
The Ludbrook rises less than a mile away from where I am now and it's almost this magical,
Mystical experience of a marshland that then becomes a trickle of a stream and that trickle of a stream gains momentum as it comes down the hillside and down through the valley.
And one of the things I'm reminded of,
Which for me is so important in my life when it comes to recognizing my well-being,
Is a metaphor I want to share with you about the stream.
So for those of you that know me,
I am very inspired by something called the Three Principles.
It's also known as the Inside Out Understanding and the basic premise of this,
As I see it,
Is a reminder that we are all connected from the same energy in life.
The Three Principles points us back to that space of connection,
That creative energy that is the same for everybody and then what comes from that as we have our human experience is the explosion of diversity and difference that has us all be humans in this world with our different looks,
Physical attributes,
Skills,
Abilities,
Mental capacity.
We have different gifts that we bring to the world and there is this sense that we come from the same source but a bit like the landscape around me with all these different flowers and trees and birds,
We all have something so different to share in the world.
So why is the stream a reminder of the Inside Out Understanding?
Well if you see,
Deeply see,
That we are all connected to this same energetic life force then there is a sense of realization and insight that we are deeply rooted in well-being.
We cannot not be in well-being because we are coming from this same creative life force.
Now what tends to happen is what we don't realize is as human beings we forget that we are of this oneness,
This one energy and in the forgetting we get lost in our thinking and thoughts and our beliefs and our stories and we start to believe that we are separate,
All of us are separate from each other and as we get lost in these stories of separation there is also the fears and anxieties that arise around our self-worth and our repetitive thought patterns and whether we're good enough.
Now conventionally what tends to happen when we have these feelings and thoughts of inadequacy and unsettledness is that we get busy on personal development and we try and fix it,
We try and think more positively or change our thinking or have more positive beliefs.
But the stream is a great reminder that in the same way that if there was some form of pollution that went into the stream and downstream near the estuary the fish were dying,
If we were to pay attention to the fish and try to look after the fish downstream then we're not actually looking at the source of the problem.
It's much more effective to come back upstream and see what the source of pollution is and remove that and that will clear the whole stream.
It's the same with our anxieties and worries and concerns,
When we try and fix those it's like trying to sort out the fish or clean the fish downstream of a pollution incident,
It's never ending.
The most effective and only way I know of truly finding myself is to come upstream,
To come back to that place of connection within me,
To come back to that pollution source in the stream and when I realize that I have mistakenly once again forgotten who I truly am,
That I've forgotten that I am wisdom,
I am well-being,
I am love,
I am compassion,
I am this energy,
When I realize that it's like I clear up the pollution and everything downstream is no longer a problem.
So for me today the request is that you reflect on this for yourself,
Is notice that when you feel that unsettledness is come upstream,
Come within yourself,
Reconnect with who you truly are,
The oneness in life and then from that grounded vantage point see what you need to do,
See what needs to happen.
