If your mind feels busy,
Jumping from thought to thought,
That's okay.
That's how your brain works.
It's kind of amazing,
Actually,
Isn't it?
I mean,
Your mind is working all the time,
Tinkering away in the background.
If you paid attention to every little thought randomly moving through your mind,
Well,
You'd never get out of bed.
Can you imagine that your body is like hardware,
Like your computer?
Your mind is the software,
The operating system.
You have a very complicated operating system.
What needs to happen for you to simply move your hand to your face is,
Well,
It's frankly a lot.
So while your brain is trying to move your hand to your face or send the signal that it's time to eat,
Your mind,
Which is another part of your operating system,
Is trying to give context to everything that's happening.
It's trying to make sense of everything,
Moment by moment.
It's trying to make sense of life.
And that is a pretty crazy endeavor at the best of times.
But when your mind is racing,
It can feel like a runaway train.
So how do you reset the system?
Hi,
I'm Karen.
Would you like to sit with me for a while?
See,
I think you're okay.
You're just dealing with a lot of thoughts right now.
And that happens sometimes to all of us.
Let's see if together we can slow down this runaway train and bring it back into the station.
There's nothing you need to fix,
Because your brain is working the way it's supposed to.
You just need a little reset.
That's all.
Now,
You can't force stillness,
But you can create a space for it.
So we're going to slow things down gently.
And then we'll invite stillness.
Take a moment to arrive,
Just as you are,
Allowing all your thoughts to come with you.
I know it seems like a lot,
But that's because it's all that you can see right now,
And it can feel pretty noisy in your head.
Remember,
Your brain and mind are doing exactly what they're made for.
They're working just fine.
We just need to shift your focus a bit.
Can you take a moment to look around the space where you are?
Whether that's in a room,
Or maybe you're outside.
Good.
Now,
Notice the colors around you,
And all the different textures.
Maybe notice any shadows or movements of light.
Great.
Now,
If you feel comfortable,
Allow your eyes to close.
And if not,
That's okay.
Just soften and turn your gaze slightly downward.
Do you hear any sounds?
Maybe just open your ears to whatever might come up.
Life is actually quite noisy.
Find any sounds near or far.
And as they arrive,
You don't need to name them or give them a story,
Because they're just sounds.
And most of those sounds have nothing to do with you right now.
Now,
Can you gently shift your awareness to your breath?
You don't have to change it or fix it.
It's perfect just the way it is.
It doesn't have to be deep or long.
It's perfect.
Can you hear your breath?
Keep breathing.
And let your attention land on this one thing.
Just your breath.
Not trying to change it,
Just noticing it coming and going.
And if you hear a sound,
That's okay.
Acknowledge it.
And then gently invite your attention to move back to your breath.
No worries.
We're just breathing.
Where do you feel your breath,
Physically?
Can you feel it at the tip of your nose or maybe in the cool air at the back of your throat?
Do you feel it in your chest or your belly?
You'll feel your breath somewhere in your body.
Where do you feel it?
And you can hear it,
The sound of your breath.
Sometimes,
Like sounds,
Thoughts come.
Thoughts will pop into our head.
Remember that it's happening all the time because our operating system is always running.
Humming along in the background.
So it's good.
It's perfect.
And when a thought comes,
Just like any sound suddenly arriving,
Acknowledge it,
And then invite your attention back to your breath.
No worries.
Let's just stay here for a moment,
Listening and feeling your breath.
Sounds,
Just like your breath,
Come and go.
Thoughts come and go.
And you're just letting them come and go,
Letting it all move through you.
Breath,
Sounds,
Sensations,
All moving gently through you.
So when your mind moves,
It's a bit like a sound.
That's okay.
Let it move through you.
And then,
Just come back,
Again and again.
No judgment.
No pressure.
You're not doing this wrong.
You're just practicing returning.
And that is enough.
