The Starry Night: Meditation For Sweet Dreams
by Julie Peters
Walk into an evening field and settle by a warm fire to enjoy the stars. Settle into a relaxed state, imagining your ancestors there to support you, your heart making wishes on shooting stars. Let your mind rest while your body makes its way toward sleep.

Welcome to this guided meditation to help your mind relax and let you get to sleep.
We'll visit a beautiful place with a dark,
Starry night to make our wishes soothe our souls and allow our systems to rest.
Please take your time to get comfortable for your sleep.
Sometimes this takes a moment,
Especially when we're a little restless or when discomfort is a part of what makes it difficult to sleep.
Fitch it as you need to and allow your body to help you find the most comfortable position that's possible for you right now.
When you find that place,
You may like to take a deep breath or three.
You could sigh out the mouth as a signal that you're coming to your rest,
Or if you prefer,
Simply breathe mindfully three times,
Signaling your intention to become still with a gentler sign.
Take a moment to acknowledge your intention to sleep.
Sometimes it is difficult to fall asleep,
And the mind may be resisting unconsciousness due to worries,
Things to do,
Trying to find a solution to the problem.
Take a moment to honor that this is your time for sleep.
There will be lots of time for thinking,
Worrying,
And solving problems in your waking day.
This is not that time.
Those types of thoughts are not meant for this space.
If you notice that your mind is hooked on something in particular,
Acknowledge that.
Perhaps give yourself a moment to think and feel about whatever the thing is.
And gently,
Softly unhook from it.
Imagine placing your burdens down.
You do not need to carry anything with you into your journey towards sleep.
Drop everything to allow your body to rest and reset from your day.
Now take a moment to notice your body in space.
Feel the heaviness of your body sinking into the support beneath you.
Notice that you can let go of any tension in your shoulders.
You can let your head and neck completely relax into the support beneath you.
Allow your belly to get really soft and spacious so that your breath finds no resistance at all.
Your breath is easy at exactly its own pace.
Your body is soft and receptive to the breath,
All the way down to your low belly and pelvic floor.
Feel the muscles of your face relaxing.
The space between your eyebrows,
The muscles of your jaw,
Even your ears.
Your legs are heavy.
Your body is sinking into the support beneath you,
Soft,
Quiet,
And supported.
Your heart beat gently slowing down at its own pace as your body recognizes that we are in a time and space that is dedicated to rest.
It is evening time in the summer.
The sun has just slipped under the horizon so there is a little light in the sky.
The edge of the horizon is deep blue,
With tinges of pink and orange from the passing sunset.
We're walking in a wide open field.
You can hear the light breeze rushing softly through the long grasses,
Caressing your skin.
The air is fresh,
The scent of summer on the air,
The night blooming wildflowers and sweet grasses present in the feel of this wide open field.
You're not alone.
Your ancestors are with you here,
The ones that love you and watch over you,
The ones that pass down their most important lessons for you to live in this life.
They are keeping you safe as you walk the expanse of this evening field.
As the light dims even more,
Your eyes begin to adjust to the night and you notice a small fire in the distance.
You walk unhurriedly,
Knowing exactly where you're going.
You feel totally safe and at ease in this beautiful wide plain.
You feel your shoulders dropping further,
Your breath deepening naturally.
You feel your feet connected to the sacred earth beneath you,
Healthy,
Rich soil underneath you,
Supporting your journey forward.
After a time,
You reach the fire.
It is the only light here on the ground.
The sun has completely slipped away and the night is velvet dark.
You can feel the warmth of the fire before you,
Your ancestors with you,
Supporting you in your journey into the night.
You allow the warmth of the flames to soothe your hands,
Your face,
And the front of your body.
The fire calms any tension you are feeling in your body,
Any aches or pains,
Melting them away with its inviting warmth.
You notice a low chair near the fire with a small table beside it.
You sit down and there is a mug of something hot on the table beside you.
You wrap your hands around it and breathe in the scent of the hot liquid in the cup.
It smells of sweet medicine,
Herbs of wellness.
It smells delicious and somewhat familiar.
You take a sip and the warm liquid spreads down your throat and into your belly,
Warming you from the inside.
Your stomach settles,
Your muscles relax,
You feel a contented sleepiness coming over your body,
And you settle back into the low chair,
Its backing reclined so that you can tip your gaze up to the sky.
As you do so,
You see the stars.
The night is completely dark,
The fire the only light for miles,
So the stars are spectacular.
You can see the perfect bright constellations in the sky,
Calling up hunters,
Legends,
Gods,
And goddesses.
The stars draw pictures in the night sky,
Twinkling and sparkling like glitter,
Tinier stars visible in the galaxies behind them.
You gaze at the enormity of the universe beyond the earth,
So cold and beautiful and perfect and alive.
After a time you see a shooting star,
You feel your heart make a wish.
You do not even need to know what the wish is with your mind,
There is a wish in your body,
And it has been offered to the shooting star.
You breathe the fresh,
Cool night air,
The warmth and comfort of the fire beside you,
Knowing you are protected and cared for by your ancestors,
Who do not speak,
But simply sit with you,
Watching over you.
Take another sip of the warm medicinal liquid,
And feel again its healthful effects warming your body,
Finding any areas of tension,
Pain,
Or unhappiness,
Soothing those areas,
Melting tension,
Calming the mind.
You feel your body heavier,
Softer,
Even more comfortable in the low chair watching the stars.
Another star shoots through the sky,
And another effortless wish.
Perhaps you know what it is in your mind,
Perhaps you don't.
Your heart knows clearly what to wish for,
You can trust it to do so.
You feel your body even softer,
Even more at ease in this beautiful place.
You gaze at the stars for a long time,
Knowing that when you are ready to close your eyes and sleep,
You will rest deeply,
Simply be returned home.
You wait for that moment,
Knowing that sleep is coming for you,
And in your heart you thank your ancestors for being here with you,
For healing and protecting you.
You thank the land for holding you,
The fire for warming you,
And the sweet night air for welcoming you so beautifully.
You lay back,
Completely contented,
Completely at ease,
Trusting that this is the perfect place for you to rest,
Knowing that you have everything you need.
You are safe and warm.
You may let go,
And you know that you will find rest and healing when you do.

You have one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard on insight timer. I drifted off to sleep before your meditation ended. Thank you. I will listen again 🙏
