I’ve been practicing meditation in the Zen and Insight/Mindfulness traditions for 30 years and have been teaching mindfulness meditation since 2000.

After more than two decades working for human rights and social justice in Latin America, Africa, and the United States, I spent the last days of the 20th Century under the Bodhi Tree—place of the Buddha’s enlightenment—in Bodh Gaya, India, and began a transition to sharing teachings of mindfulness and dharma in classes, workshops, and retreats in the United States and internationally.

My current focus brings mindfulness to daily habits, helping people shift from autopilot toward behaviors that create greater happiness and freedom of the heart.

*Please check out my book “The Here-and-Now Habit: How Mindfulness Can Help You Break Unhealthy Habits Once and for All” published by New Harbinger—and the course and meditations on this theme on the Insight Timer app.

As a teacher and social activist, I work to align the inner life with the outer—applying the wisdom and compassion of Buddhist teachings to the social, political, economic and environmental concerns of our time. Students think of me as a spiritual friend who helps them access their innate awareness and wisdom.

I have been helping lead trainings for The Garrison Institute’s Contemplative Based Resilience program in Jordan for humanitarian aid workers responding to the Syrian and other refugee crises in the Middle East. I have also led mindfulness meditation programs in the U.S. Congress, in environmental and other NGOs and workplace settings, and serve in the community of meditation teachers engaged in the movement for racial justice and equity.

My formal training includes a four-year meditation teacher-training program with Jack Kornfield and other senior teachers at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California and the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Mass. I also trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Somatic Experiencing, a mind-body approach to healing trauma. I have a law degree from London University and a doctorate in political science from UCLA.

I am teaching workshops and retreats in 2018 and 2019 at Kripalu, Insight Meditation Community of Washington, and internationally in Cuba and Greece. Please see my website for details: www.hugh-byrne.com
