Understanding The Behaviors And Addictions That Keep Us Stuck

With Karelin Wadkins

Understanding the Behaviors and Addictions That Keep Us Stuck is a compassionate, psychology-based course for anyone who wants to better understand their relationship with alcohol, substances, or repetitive behaviors such as scrolling, shopping, gambling, gaming, pornography, emotional eating, or other coping patterns that no longer feel aligned with the life they want to live. Rather than focusing on shame, willpower, or perfection, this course explores the psychology behind why we develop these behaviors in the first place. Together, we'll look at how the brain learns habits, the role of emotions and the nervous system, and how anxiety, trauma, ADHD, autism, depression, and other life experiences can influence the ways we cope. Across seven engaging lessons, you'll learn to recognize the needs beneath your behaviors, build healthier coping skills, and develop greater self-awareness, resilience, and choice. Each lesson includes a reflection to help you apply what you're learning to your own life. Whether you're sober curious, in recovery, trying to reduce a behavior that's creating problems, or simply wanting to understand yourself more deeply, you are welcome here. This isn't about becoming perfect. It's about replacing self-criticism with curiosity, expanding your choices, and discovering that lasting change begins with understanding—not shame. If you're ready to move from impulses to intentional choices, I'd be honored to walk alongside you.

Lesson 1

Every Behavior Has A Story: Understanding Your Patterns With Compassion

In this first lesson, we begin by exploring a foundational idea: every behavior has a story. Rather than viewing alcohol, substance use, or compulsive behaviors through the lens of shame or failure, we’ll explore how these behaviors often develop as attempts to cope, find relief, meet needs, or navigate difficult experiences. You’ll be introduced to the Curiosity Framework—Trigger → Need → Behavior → Relief → Consequence → New Skill—which will guide you throughout this course. This lesson invites you to begin looking at your own patterns with compassion, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of yourself. This course is not about judgment or perfection. It is about creating awareness, expanding your choices, and discovering new ways to support yourself through life’s challenges.

Lesson 2

Why Our Brains Keep Coming Back: Understanding Habits, Relief, And Urges

In this lesson, we explore why our brains return to behaviors that provide relief—even when those behaviors may create problems over time. You’ll learn how habits are formed, how the brain responds to immediate rewards, and why urges can feel so powerful. Rather than viewing cravings, impulses, or repeated patterns as a lack of willpower, we’ll explore them as learned responses shaped by experience. Understanding how the brain creates these pathways can help reduce shame and create more opportunities for intentional choice. Through the Curiosity Framework—Trigger → Need → Behavior → Relief → Consequence → New Skill—you’ll begin recognizing the moments when automatic patterns arise and discover how awareness can create space for change.

Lesson 3

Understanding Yourself Through Your Coping: Mental Health, Neurodiversity, And The Patterns We Develop

In this lesson, we explore how our mental health, nervous system, neurotype, and life experiences influence the ways we cope. Anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, autism, OCD, chronic stress, and other experiences can all shape the strategies we develop to find relief, connection, stimulation, or emotional balance. You’ll learn why two people can experience the same situation and develop completely different coping responses. Rather than seeing these patterns as personal failures, we’ll explore them as adaptations—ways our brains have learned to navigate the challenges we’ve faced. This lesson invites you to look at your own story with compassion and curiosity, recognizing that understanding where your patterns came from can be an important step toward creating new choices.

Lesson 4

Finding The Need Beneath The Behavior: What Are You Really Seeking?

In this lesson, we explore one of the most important questions in understanding our behaviors: What need is this behavior trying to meet? Alcohol, substances, and compulsive behaviors often provide something meaningful in the moment—relief from stress, a sense of connection, comfort, excitement, escape, or a break from overwhelming emotions. By looking beneath the behavior, we can better understand what our brain and nervous system have been seeking. You’ll learn how to separate the behavior from the need, creating space to discover healthier and more sustainable ways to support yourself. This lesson builds on the Curiosity Framework by helping you recognize that the behavior is often a strategy, while the underlying need is the deeper message asking for attention.

Lesson 5

Building A Bigger Toolbox: Creating New Ways To Cope

In this lesson, we explore how lasting change comes from building new skills rather than simply removing old behaviors. When a behavior has become a primary way of coping, letting it go can feel difficult because it often served an important purpose. You’ll learn how to identify new strategies that support your emotional, physical, and relational needs while creating more flexibility in how you respond to stress, discomfort, and urges. We’ll explore why there is no single “perfect” coping skill and how building a variety of tools can create more freedom and choice. The goal is not perfection. The goal is developing more ways to care for yourself and respond intentionally when life feels challenging.

Lesson 6

Creating A Life That Supports Change: Environment, Relationships, and Identity

In this lesson, we explore why lasting change is about more than individual willpower or learning new coping skills. The environment around us—including our routines, relationships, and daily experiences—plays an important role in shaping the behaviors we repeat. You’ll learn how small changes to your surroundings, support systems, and daily habits can make healthier choices easier to practice. We’ll also explore the role of identity and the stories we tell ourselves, recognizing that change is not about becoming someone completely different—it’s about becoming more aligned with the person you want to be. This lesson invites you to consider how you can create a life that supports your growth, builds self-trust, and reinforces the changes you are working toward.

Lesson 7

From Coping To Choice: Building Self-Trust And Continuing Your Journey

Congratulations on making it through the entire course! Completing this journey is an important accomplishment, and I hope you take a moment to recognize the time and curiosity you have invested in understanding yourself more deeply. In this final lesson, we bring together everything you have learned about your behaviors, your brain, your needs, your coping strategies, and the changes you want to create. We’ll explore how lasting change is not about perfection or never experiencing urges—it’s about developing awareness, compassion, and the ability to make intentional choices. You’ll learn how to approach setbacks with curiosity instead of shame, continue building self-trust, and carry the Curiosity Framework forward as a lifelong tool for understanding yourself. The goal is not to become someone who never struggles. The goal is to become someone who knows how to respond with awareness, compassion, and choice.
