The Scroll: Why We Get Hooked And How To Meet The Urge

With Jacky Power

The Scroll is a six-part course from Jacky Power — BBC-featured therapeutic poet, EFT practitioner, and addiction specialist who wrote her thesis on social media addiction. Drawing on her own research and years of clinical work, Jacky takes apart exactly what keeps us hooked — the design tricks, the attachment patterns, the reward chemistry — and replaces the usual advice (delete the apps, buy a lockbox) with something that actually holds: understanding what you're really reaching for. Across six lessons you'll learn: — the specific design mechanics built to keep you scrolling — why you keep reaching even when you're not enjoying it anymore — the difference between reaching towards connection and reaching away from a feeling — a practical, judgement-free plan for a phone relationship that actually works — an EFT tapping practice for the exact moment the urge arrives This course discusses loneliness, compulsive habits, and — briefly, in Lesson 2 — some distressing news headlines used as an example. It is not a substitute for professional support. If social media use is part of a wider struggle for you, please reach out to a qualified professional; twelve-step fellowships for this specific issue also now exist.

Meet your Teacher

Jacky Power is a therapeutic poet, EFT practitioner, and addiction specialist. She holds an academic background in psychology and counselling, and her postgraduate thesis examined social media addiction — specifically, the relationship between Facebook use and adult attachment theory. Jacky has spent years working clinically in addiction, helping people understand and change compulsive patterns of behaviour. She combines this clinical experience with her own original research into why social media platforms are so difficult to put down, drawing on attachment theory, behavioural psychology, and the neuroscience of reward. She created this course to bring together her academic research, her clinical training in EFT and addiction, and her voice as a poet — offering a way to understand compulsive scrolling that goes beyond willpower and detox, towards a genuine understanding of what we're reaching for when we reach for our phones.

Lesson 1

How They Hook You

That little red dot. The pull-to-refresh. The endless feed with no bottom. None of it is an accident. Jacky Power takes the mechanics apart, piece by piece — the colour psychology behind your notifications, the slot-machine design behind your feed, and the neuroscience of surprise that keeps both running. Includes a poem written from a single real scroll, and a simple practice that quietly drains the pull of its power. Contains some distressing news headlines, used as an example of how the feed works — brief, but worth knowing before you press play. Not a substitute for professional support.

Lesson 2

What Are You Really Scrolling For?

You picked up your phone to check one last thing before bed. Fifty minutes later, you can't remember why — and you feel like you've eaten a whole bag of sweets. In this opening lesson, addiction specialist Jacky Power introduces the question underneath this whole course: not what are you looking at, but what are you reaching for. Drawn from her own thesis on social media addiction, this is where the course's central idea begins — that the scroll was never really about willpower. This is for you if you've tried the screen limits, the greyscale, the lockbox — and found yourself back on the apps anyway. Not a substitute for professional support.

Lesson 3

The Post-And-Check Loop

You post something, then check. And check. And check again. Or — a quieter pattern — you never post at all, and still can't stop watching. This lesson takes on both: the checking loop, and the lurker's longing hiding underneath it. Jacky Power explores what each pattern is really asking, and offers a gentler way to meet both the need to be seen and the need to stay safely unseen. Mentions attachment history and childhood learning. Not a substitute for professional support.

Lesson 4

Are You Wanting Or Liking?

Think about the last time you were scrolling and lost track of time? When we begin to have a psychological dependency on something our attitude towards it changes. In this track Jacky explores the theory behind 'liking' your phone use or 'wanting it', drawing on theories from drug dependency. She offers a technique to help you become more aware of your use. Ofcom research quoted in the audio is from 2015.

Lesson 5

Not A Detox

In the final lesson, Jacky Power lays out what her research pointed to instead of the usual war on willpower — a three-part plan built on understanding, not restriction. Closes with an original poem, "You Promised Me A Hovis Truck."

Lesson 6

Bonus Practice: EFT: The Urge To Scroll

A tapping practice for the exact moment the pull to scroll shows up — not after, not in reflection, but right there, phone in hand. Jacky Power, EFT practitioner, guides you through rating the urge, tapping through it, and rating it again. Evidence-based, and built to be used again and again, whenever the pull returns. A self-soothing practice, not a treatment for addiction. Not a substitute for professional support.
